Type material examined. Holotype: adult male reared from larva, Canada, Nunavut, Tuktoyaktuk , 7.VII. 1971, leg. D. E. Oliver.
Additional material examined. Two males reared from larva, Canada, Nunavut, Tuktoyaktuk , 11 . VII. 1971, leg . D . E . Oliver; two larvae, Northwest Territories, Oscar Creek , 3 . VII. 1972, leg . F .W.I . Pipeline Project .
Notes. The Holotype previously stored in Zoological Museum, Bergen (Type No. 39 CHI 7214), was kindly returned to the Canadian National Collection of Insects, Arachnids and Nematodes, Ottawa by Dr Trond Andersen as it was intended by late Dr Ole Saether.
Description
Adult Male (n = 3). As described and illustrated by Saether (1981). Additional characteristics and corrections: Third palpomere with sensilla coeloconica and two sensilla clavata anterodorsally. Thorax with 10–12 dorsocentrals. Anal point 54–57, 56 μm long.
Female. Unknown
Pupa (n = 3). As described and illustrated by Saether (1981).
Larva (n = 3). As described and illustrated by Saether (1981). Additional characteristics: Head capsule of mounted specimens yellow to light brown with occipital margins darker ( Figure 7 View Figure 7 (a)).
Distribution and Ecology. This species has been reported in Nunavut and Northwest Territories of Canada and from Russia Far East. The species has also been reported in Minnesota and Ohio USA. We could not confirm the record given by Berg and Hellenthal (1991) from Indiana USA. In the tundra larva of D. bicaudatus inhabits lotic habitats.
