Bryoria yunnana Li. S.Wang & Xin Y. Wang sp. nov. ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 )
Mycobank # MB 816229
Thallus decumbent basally, erect in the upper part, pseudocyphellae ellipsoid to rhombic, convex, grayish white in color, apothecia subapical, eciliate.
Type:— CHINA. Yunnan: Dali Co., Cangshan Mt. , 3400 m elev., 25°40’N, 100°06’E, on branches of Abies delavayi , 21 July 2004, L. S. Wang 04–23414 ( KUN-L, Holotype!; H, isotype!) GoogleMaps .
Etymology:— The epithet “yunnana ” refers to the type locality of the species.
Morphology:— Thallus decumbent in the basal part, erect and forming tufts in the upper part, 2–3.5 cm tall ( Fig. 5A View FIGURE 5 ), fragile; surface black and carbonized at the base, upper part fawn brown to olive brown (sometimes grayish white when dried), shiny; branching with distinct and cylindrical main branches, 0.2–0.4 mm in diam., angles between dichotomies acute to perpendicular, basal part isotomic dichotomously branched, becoming irregular and forming tufts near the apex, third-order branches not well developed, branch angles obtuse; lateral spinules perpendicular to the main branches, basal parts not constricted, 0.2–0.5 mm long, concolorous with the thallus; spinulose branches rare, 0.5–2 mm long, obtuse; pseudocyphellae oblong-ellipsoid to rhombic, grayish white and clearly convex, c. 0.1 × 0.5 mm ( Fig. 5B View FIGURE 5 ); soralia absent; isidia - like spinules absent; cortex 40–50 μm thick, single-layered, outer part brownish, inner part hyaline; medulla hollow or loosely composed, hyphae not ornamented, 4–5 μm in diam.; apothecia sub-apical, sessile, exciple complete when young, disappearing when mature, eciliate, usually with pseudocyphellae, disc concave when young, becoming convex when mature, light yellow to yellowish brown, 0.5–2.5 mm in diam. ( Fig. 5C View FIGURE 5 ); asci clavate, 8-spored, ascospores ellipsoid, simple and hyaline, c. 7–8 × 10–12 μm, spore wall 0.5 μm thick; pycnidia not seen.
Secondary metabolites:— Medulla P+ yellow to orange, K± yellow, C–, KC± yellow, CK–, containing fumarprotocetraric acid and a trace of an unknown compound ( RF 2–3, light green).
Substrate and ecology: —On bark of Abies , Pinus and Larix , rarely on Quercus and Rhododendron , at elevations between 2760–4300 m; usually growing with B. divergescens and B. smithii .
Distribution in China:— Jilin, Shannxi, Yunnan, Sichuan, Taiwan and Xizang.
World distribution:— Only known from China.
Notes:— The species is characterized by a decumbent basal thallus with erect upper part, fawn brown isotomic dichotomous branches in the base to irregular in the apex, grayish white and convex, ellipsoid to rhombic pseudocyphellae and sub-apical apothecia.
Bryoria yunnana resembles B. bicolor in morphology, but the latter species has well-developed third-order branches, and its pseudocyphellae are fusiform, dark brown and plane. Bryoria yunnana is also similar to B. rigida P.M.Jørg. & Myllys , but the latter species differs in having distinct main branches, fissuriform and concave pseudocyphellae and brown to black thallus color.
