This is the genotype for Hyracotherium . It is a rare fossil found only in the Paris and London Basins of Europe. This OTU was scored using the type material, a single skull with no associated lower teeth (BMNH 16336), as figured by Forster-Cooper (1932) and Simpson (1952). Lower teeth were figured by Hooker (1994). This taxon was extensively discussed by Owen (1841; the original diagnosis), Forster-Cooper (1932), and Simpson (1952).
