13. Puccinia superflua Holway (1904: 392) .
≡ Allodus superflua (Holw.) Orton (1916: 198) View in CoL .
Type:― MEXICO. Iguala, Guerrero, 4 Oct 1900, on Ipomoea murucoides Roem. & Schult, Holway s.n. Figure 4. I− L View FIGURE 4 (Isotype).
Spermogonia and aecia unknown. Uredinia ( Aecidium type) scattered singly or in groups on discolored spots on the abaxial side of leaves, sori short-cylindrical, peridium whitish, easily falling away, peridial cells 33–47 × 10–19 μm, cylindrical or rhomboidal, outer-facing wall 1.5–2.0 μm thick, striate, inner-facing wall 5–7 μm thick, prominantly verrucose, often a much thicker apex, urediniospores catenulate, 21–26 × 16–19(–23) μm, globoid, wall 2–2.5 μm thick, colorless, coarsely verrucose, warts (0.5–)1–1.5(–2) μm across on top. Telia as the uredinia but without peridia and blackish, 0.1–0.4 mm in diameter, circular in outline, at times in old uredinia, at times confluent forming sori up to 3 mm across, ruptured epidermis conspicuous; teliospores 43–68 × 25–36 μm, ellipsoid, narrowed above, rounded below, not or very slightly constricted at septum, wall 3–5 μm thick at sides, 8–12 μm above and prolonged into a beak, dark-chestnut- or chocolate-brown, coarsely verrucose, pores at septum in upper cell and in the lower cell obscure; pedicel up to 90 μm long, 10–12 μm wide, colorless but tinted next to spore. ( Holway 1904; Arthur & Orton 1921). Life cycle (?/?, IIcv, III).
Specimen examined (Isotype)― MEXICO. Guerrero, Iguala, (originally reported as Ipomoea murucoides ), 4 Oct 1900, on Ipomoea arborescens (Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd.) G. Don, E.W.D. Holway s.n. (PUR36122!)
Distribution ― Puccinia superflua is known with certainty only from the type ( Holway 1904; Orton 1916; Hennen & Cummins 1973).
Notes ―Our microscopy observations were very similar to those of Holway (1904) and Arthur & Orton (1921) but we complement the description with the width of the pedicel (10–12 μm) near the hilum and the germinative pores in upper cells at septum.
