2. Puccinia cuasoensis A.A. Carvalho & J.F. Hennen. sp. nov. Figure 1 E− I View FIGURE 1 (Holotype).

MycoBank:—MB 819321

Type:― BRAZIL. São Paulo: São Paulo, Forestry Reserve of Cidade Universitária Armando Salles de Oliveira (CUASO), 26 May 1998, on Ipomoea cairica (L.) Sweet, A.A. Carvalho Jr. 98−328 (Holotype IBI18345!, Isotype RB!).

The new species can be readily distinguished from the other by the presence of urediniospores catenulate, finely verrucose, 19–32 μm across, wall uniformly ticket at sides. Teliospores 54–75 × 26–32 μm, constricted at septum, wall one-layered, up to 11 μm at umbo, rounded up and down.

Spermogonia and aecia unknown. Uredinia ( Aecidium type) on hypertrophied and chlorotic spots, amphigenous, scattered singly or in small groups, with 0.2–1.0 mm, cupulate, whitish, peridial cells 25–44 × 17–27 μm, oblong to polygonal, variable in size, not firmly connected, wall 2–5 μm thick, outer wall smooth, inner wall, verruculose– aculeate; urediniospores 19–32 μm across, globose, ovoid or polyedral, wall uniformly about 1.0–2.6 μm, closely and finely verrucose, hyaline to yellowish. Telia mainly on adaxial side of leaves, emerging from, opposed or at side of uredinia, blackish, pulvinated, teliospores 54–75 × 26–32 μm, blackish-brown, oblong-ellipsoid or ellipsoid, mostly rounded at each end, constricted at septum, wall one layer, about 3–5 μm thick at sides, up to 11 μm at apex, verrucose; pedicel up to 125 × 9–13μm, often tinted brown next to spore. Life cycle (?/?, IIcv, III).

Additional specimens examined ― BRAZIL. São Paulo: São Paulo, Forestry Reserve of Cidade Universitária Almando Salles de Oliveira ( CUASO), on Ipomoea cairica ( L.) Sweet, 18 Aug 1997, A. A. Carvalho Jr.97−161 ( IBI 17931-II), 13 Jan 1998, A. A. Carvalho Jr. 98−020 ( IBI 18037-II), 23 Apr 1998, A. A. Carvalho Jr. 98−290 ( IBI 18307-II).

Etymology —From Cidade Universitaria Armando de Salles Oliveira (CUASO) where the specimens were collected.

Notes and taxonomic affinities — Puccinia cuasoensis has teliospores rounded up and down, walls with only one layer and with relatively uniform thick urediniospore walls. These characteristics place P. cuasoensis near to P. batatae , P. distinguenda and P. rubicunda . Puccinia cuasoensis differs from P. distinguenda and P. rubicunda by the larger teliospores and constricted septa, but differs from all three species by having a larger wall in the umbo region.
