Specimens for this study were collected with SCUBA diving at different localities in the Mexican Pacific, from various depths (0 to 30 m). The sites include the Revillagigedo Archipelago ( Socorro Island , San Benedicto I. and Clarion I.), Marías Islands and the entire Gulf of California. All samples are deposited in the Museo de Historia Natural of the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur , La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico .

Based on original descriptions and illustrations of Veron (2000), five specimens corresponded to the morphology of P. arnaudi , 17 to P. australiensis , 16 to P. lichen , 21 to P. lobata , and 21 to P. lutea . Additionally, the holotype of P. baueri (AMNH 3348, American Museum of Natural History, New York, NY), as well as the type specimens of P. excavata (YPM1677A, Collection of Invertebrates, Yale Peabody Museum, Yale University, New Haven, CT), P. lichen (USNM 666, Invertebrate Collection, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC), P. paschalensis (USNM 68279) and P. lobata (USNM 652) were also included for analysis, for a total of six Porites species and 85 specimens analyzed, respectively.
