Taxonomy. Original description: Rhodeus syriacus Lortet, 1883: 21 View in CoL [24], pl. 9 [Lakes east of Damascus, Syria; syntypes:?MCZ 25539 (3), MHNG 611.22 (2), USNM 48029 (1)].—Syrian synonyms: None.—Revisions: None.—Illustration: Lortet (1883: pl. 9) as Rhodeus syriacus View in CoL .
Status in Syria. Recorded from Syria in original description as Rhodeus syriacus by Lortet (1883: 21); subsequently reported by Beckman (1962: 137) as Phoxinellus syriacus . —Syrian material: MCZ, MNHN, USNM.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Syria: Nahr al Barada valley.—Distribution in River Basin: 3-Desert, 4- Orontes, 5-Barada & Awaj, 6-Coastal, 7-Al-Yarmouk.—General distribution: Nahr al Barada valley, Syria.— Distribution in Ecoregion: 436-Coastal Levant, 437-Orontes, 438- Jordan River, 440-Arabian Interior.— Habitat: This species inhabits springs and spring-fed streams with clear waters and dense vegetation. Freshwater.
Economic importance. No commercial importance.
Conservation. Conservation status in Syria: Unknown.—IUCN: CR ( IUCN 2023).—Threats: ABS, CON, HAB.— High sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.—Decline status: Decreasing.— High priority for conservation action.
