Taxonomy. Original description: Barbus barbulus Heckel, 1847: 2 View in CoL 56 [Kara Agatsch River (Qarah Aqaj River) near Geré (Jereh), Iran, 29°15’N, 51°58’E; Qweik River at Aleppo, Syria; syntypes: NMW 6596 (1)].—Syrian synonyms: None.—Revisions: (see Khaefi et al. 2017b: and Valiallahi (2020: 59).—Illustrations: Khaefi et al. (2017b: 837, 840, figs. 2, 3); Valiallahi (2020: 60, figs. 1-2).
Status in Syria. Recorded from Syria in original description by Heckel (1847: 256) as Barbus barbulus ; subsequently reported by Gruvel (1931); Beckman (1962: 87); Krupp & Schneider (1991b: 73); Ali (2003) as Barbus barbulus .—Syrian material: MCZ, MNHN, SMNS, MSL.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Syria: Qweik River system; Euphrates and Tigris river basins.— Distribution in River Basin: 1-Dajleh & Khabour, 2-Euphrates & Aleppo.—General distribution: Asia Minor and Middle East: Qweik River system ( Syria); Euphrates and Tigris river basins ( Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran); Zoreh, Mond and Kol river basins ( Iran).—Distribution in Ecoregion: 441-Lower Tigris & Euphrates, 442-Upper Tigris & Euphrates.—Habitat: This species inhabits a very wide range of all kinds of permanent waterbodies, at least seasonally, with gravel or running water. Freshwater.
Economic importance. Commercially important.
Conservation. Conservation status in Syria: Unknown.—IUCN: NE (2023).—Threats: Unknown.—Low sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.—Decline status: Unknown.—Low priority for conservation action.
