Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby View in CoL (Figs 84–85)

Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby, 1915: 321 View in CoL –322 Lectotype Jamaica (USNM).

Distribution. This species is not recorded from mainland Australia. It has been recorded widely in tropical climates elsewhere around the world (for details see Evans, 2006; Mound & Halsey, 1978)), and Christmas Island ( Australia) (see Bellis, et al., 2004).

Hosts. Detailed in Table 2, sourced from (ASCU, ANIC, Evans 2006). Mound and Halsey (1978) also list a wide range of hosts covering 35 families including many economically important plants.

Material examined. Australian territory – Christmas Island ( QDPIF) and PNG Torres Strait - Daru Island, ( ASCU). Extralimital material examined includes series from Hawaii, Indonesia (West Papua, Java), Indian Ocean islands, Mexico, PNG and Thailand.

Comments. The close proximity to, but absence from, mainland Australia, its broad range of hosts and pest status warrants inclusion of this species in this work. Martin (1999) also recognised this requirement noting that the species has now spread abundantly throughout the tropics. This dark coloured species is immediately recognised by the sparse, broad teeth of its margin and other characters mentioned in the key.
