Diagnosis. Although this new species lacks the lateral sclerites on male segment X, it is tentatively placed in the A. hirudopsis Group based on other male genitalia features, particularly the pair of apical spine-like processes on the posterior margin of segment VIII. This new species is more similar to A. viuda Harris & Flint, 2002 , but it differs by bearing only 1 pair of straight spine-like processes on the posterior margin of segment VIII ( A. viuda has 2 pairs of sclerotized processes) and by the short phallus, with a median constriction, and the apical portion with sclerotized lateral edges (in A. viuda , the phallus is slender and elongate with subapical spines).
Description. Male body. Length 1.7 mm (n=2). General color in ethanol light brown. Antennae each with 18 articles; scape enlarged, semicircular in anterior view ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 – 13 ); pedicel slightly longer than broad; flagellomeres short and setose; apical article tapering ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 – 13 ). Ocelli 2. Maxillary palpi each 5-articulated; labial palpi each 3- articulated. Mesoscutellum with transverse suture. Metascutellum approximately rectangular. Tibial spurs 0,2,4. Fore- and hind wings with long brown setae. Abdominal segment VII with ventromesal process ( Figs. 10, 12 View FIGURES 9 – 13 ).
Male genitalia. Segment VIII, in ventral view, with pair of stout spine-like processes on posterior margin ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 9 – 13 ). Segment IX fused with segment X in dorsal view ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 9 – 13 ); reduced ventrally; pair of slender apodemes from anterolateral margins reaching segment VII internally ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 9 – 13 ). Segment X short, almost quadrangular in dorsal view ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 9 – 13 ). Subgenital plate short, mesally with several short spines; posterior margin rounded ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 9 – 13 ). Inferior appendages absent. Phallus short, constricted mesally; apical half with lateral edges more sclerotized, mesal area membranous with tubular internal structure, and with ejaculatory duct protruding subapically ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 9 – 13 ).
Female body. Length 1.8 mm (n=1). General color in alcohol light brown. Antennae each with 17; scape simple. Ocelli 3. Other features of head and thorax as in male. Abdominal segment VI with short mesal process. Segment VII with elongate and setose mesal process dorsally; with plumose setae on ventral surface.
Female genitalia. Segment VIII with ring of setae ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 14 – 15 ); pair of elongate and slender apodemes from anterolateral margins reaching anterior portion of segment VI internally ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 14 – 15 ). Segment IX short; pair of elongate apodemes from anterolateral margins reaching posterior portion of segment VI internally ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 14 – 15 ). Segment X short, rounded, with pair of apical papillae ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 14 – 15 ). Bursa copulatrix with anterior portion wide, lateral margins emarginated; posterior portion long and slender ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 14 – 15 ).
Material examined. Holotype male. BRAZIL, São Paulo State, Ubatuba municipality, Rio Canoas, 23°20’18,7”S 44°50’ 16,8W, 475 m, 18.vi.2004, A.A. Huamantinco & J.L. Nessimian leg., light trap ( DZRJ). Paratypes. Same data except: 1 female ( DZRJ); same data except: Rio da Fazenda, 23°20’19.7”S 44°50’14.8”W, 31 m, 19.iv.2004, 1 male ( DZRJ).
Etymology. The species name refers to the municipality where the specimens were collected. Ubatuba means ‘canoe place’ in Tupi-guarani (Brazilian indigenous language).
Distribution. Brazil: São Paulo State.
