48. Limonium pigadiense View in CoL (Rechinger fil.) Rechinger fil. (1943a: 427) ( Fig. 48 View FIGURE 48 )

Basionym :― Statice pigadiensis Rechinger View in CoL fil. (1938: 147). Type (lectotype, designated here):― GREECE. Dodecanese : Insula Karpathos (Scarpanto): In saxosis calc. litoreis ad Pigadia, 13 June 1935, Rechinger & Rechinger 8108 (M!, isolectotypes BM!, G!, W!) .

Description: —Plant perennial, glabrous, forming a sub-shrub 18–50 cm tall, with many ascending to erect stems and a robust tap-root. Caudices 6–14 cm long, densely branched, densely spirally leafy in the upper half, living leaves in rosettes at apices. Leaves fleshy, rigid, pale green, 25–65 mm long and 5–15 mm broad, spathulate to oblanceolate-spathulate, apex obtuse to acute, sometimes mucronate, only on the upper side slightly verrucate, with one central nerve, gradually tapering into the petiole. Stems 10–40 cm long, rugose, pale green, slightly flexuous, branching frequently begins above the lower quarter. Inflorescence mostly obtrullate or trullate in outline. Sterile branches absent or only 1–3 per stem, 1–5.5 cm long, unbranched. Fertile branches 3–10 cm long, slightly curved, directed obliquely upwards, forming branching angles of 35°–45°, undivided or sometimes branched. Spikes 15–75 mm long, normally straight, erect to inserted obliquely upwards or patently. Spikelets 6.6–7.3 mm long, composed of 1–2 (–4) flowers, remotely to densely arranged with 3–5 per cm. Outer bract 2.2–2.6 mm long and 2.3–2.9 mm broad, triangular-ovate, obtuse to acute; bract margin broadly membranous; central part slightly fleshy, acuminate. Middle bract membranous, 2.4–3.0 mm long and 1.9–2.6 mm broad, oblong-elliptic to oblong-obovate, rounded. Inner bract 5.6–6.0 mm long and 4.0– 4.8 mm broad, obovate to elliptic, rounded; bract margin broadly membranous; central part fleshy, 4.8–5.0 mm long and 2.2–3.5 mm broad, oblong to oblong-obovate, acuminate, forming a triangular tip, 0.5–0.7 mm long, not reaching the upper margin. Calyx 5.2–6.5 mm long, exceeding the inner bract by 1.0– 1.8 mm; calyx tube more or less sparsely long hairy, with 5 ribs ending at the base of lobes; calyx lobes ca. 0.6 × 1.0 mm, semi-elliptical. Corolla pale violet.

Chromosome number: —2n = 43 (Erben Li–1533, Li–1575, Li–1724, unpubl.).

Distribution: —It is restricted to Karpathos and neighbouring small islands, where it is quite frequent ( Fig. 94A View FIGURE 94 ).

Habitat: —Calcareous and marly rocky coast.

Taxonomic remarks: — L. pigadiense is similar to L. sieberi , but it differs from the latter by having longer caudices, 1-nerved leaves, and broader inner bracts. Plants growing around Makris Gialos (South Karpathos) have longer spikelets and broader inner bracts..
