Type designation. Holotype male with the following label data: Costa Rica: Heredia Pr.: La Selva Biol. Sta., 3 km S Pto. Viejo, 10°26'N 84°01'W, 16 Abril 1993, bosque secundario, M/14/077, INBIOCR1002258818. Allotype female labeled same as holotype except Heredia: Est. Biol. La Selva, 50–150 m, 3 Aug 1993, INBioOET, M/07/169, INB0003645862.
Size range. Male: 4.6 x 1.8 mm; Female: 3.6 x 1.2 mm to 4.5 x 1.6 mm
Description. Male: Head longer than wide, strongly narrowed behind eyes to basal constriction; punctures small, widely spaced; gena slightly less than ½ longitudinal diameter of eye; longitudinal diameter of eye subequal to length of rostrum; frons subequal in width to rostral base, flattened. Rostrum shorter than head, widened beyond antennal insertions; width at apex slightly wider than frons. Antennae inserted at middle of rostrum; club distinctly longer than funicle; segment 1 of funicle ovoglobose; slightly narrower and shorter than scape; funicle segment 2 slender, clavate, subequal in length to funicle segment 1; segments 3 and 4 subequal to segments 1 and 2 in length but more cylindrical; segments 5 and 6 similar to segments 3 and 4 but shorter; segment 7 much shorter, beadlike; basal and middle segments of club subequal in length; terminal club segment 1/3 shorter than middle or basal segment. Pronotum only slightly longer than wide, widest at base, flattened dorsally, moderately and somewhat irregularly punctured; distance between punctures subequal to diameter of puncture. Elytra about twice as long as wide, widest at apical third; striae distinct throughout, becoming slightly smaller posteriorly; intervals weakly convex, as wide or wider than strial row; single row of semierect setae associated with strial interspaces; single row of erect setae along elytral intervals; next to last strial row joins last strial row at or near middle. Female: Same as male except rostrum longer than head and width at apex subequal to width of frons; antennae inserted just before basal 1/3; frons wider than width of rostral base; antennal club subequal in length to funicle.
Color. Body orangish to reddish brown; basal 1/5 of each elytron blackish brown; antennae, femoral apices and tibia along lateral edge brown to blackish brown.
Comments. The type series consists of 17 specimens. Eugnamptus herediensis is distinguished by the dark markings across the base of the elytra in both sexes ( Fig.18 View FIGURE 18 ). The pedon is weakly narrowed from the base to near the apical 1/4 and then distinctly narrowed to the apex which bears two small toothlike denticles ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 6 b). The TA is similar to that of E. pusillus but much shorter. This species was collected only in malaise traps.
Name derivation. The specific name refers to the Costa Rican province in which La Selva is located.
