Eugnamptus sulcicollis Hamilton & Novinger , new species

( Figs. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 6 , 14 View FIGURE 14 )

Type designation. Holotype male with the following label data: Costa Rica, Heredia: Est. Biol. La Selva, 50–150 m, 10°26'N 84°01'W, 10 Nov 1994, INBioOET, FVK/34/17, Virola koschnyi , INB0003645881. Allotype female with the same data except FVK/34/13, INB0003645882.

Size range. Male: 3.7 x 1.4 mm to 4.4 x 1.8 mm; Female: 3.8 x 1.4 mm to 4.6 x 1.8 mm.

Description. Male: Head longer than wide, weakly narrowed behind eyes, densely punctured; punctures close together, nearly touching; frons narrow, ½ as wide as base of rostrum, with median longitudinal linelike groove and pale coarse forward projecting reclinate setae; gena subequal in length to ½ diameter of eye; eyes large, longitudinal diameter distinctly longer than length of rostrum. Rostrum short and wide, about 1/3 shorter than head, distinctly widened beyond antennal insertions; width at apex nearly 3 times width of frons. Antennae inserted just behind middle of rostrum; club subequal to funicle in length; funicle segment 1 shorter and more cylindrical than scape; funicle segment 2 more slender, weakly clavate, longer than segment 1; funicle segments 3–6 subequal in length to segment 2 but more cylindrical; funicle segment 7 slightly shorter than segments 3–6; basal club segment slightly longer than middle segment; terminal segment shorter than middle segment. Pronotum longer than wide, widest at base, densely punctured throughout; punctures nearly touching, deeply impressed; with distinct median longitudinal linelike groove; groove about ½ length of pronotum; sides of groove raised, smooth.

Elytra 1 ½ times longer than wide; widest near declivities; striae strongly impressed; intervals distinctly convex, narrower than width of striae; most elytral setae semierect and directed posterolaterally; double row of semierect to reclinate setae associated with elytral interspaces; scattered erect setae on elytral intervals; next to last strial row joins last strial row at middle of elytra. Female: Same as male except rostrum longer, more arcuate, almost as long as head; rostral width at apex 1/3 wider than frons; frontal pubescence finer, less dense; antennae inserted near basal 1/3 of rostrum; and antennal club distinctly shorter than the funicle.

Color. Body reddish brown to yellowish brown throughout; antennae paler; ventral areas of rostrum, head and thorax darker.

Comments. The type series consists of 147 specimens. Eugnamptus sulcicollis is easily recognized by the brownish coloration, setosity of frons and the middorsal longitudinal groove on the pronotum and head ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 f). The pedon is parallelsided and broadly rounded at the apex and the TA is very long and apically trifid ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ). All but one specimen was taken by fogging V. koschnyi .

Name derivation. The specific name refers to the middorsal pronotal groove.
