Diagnosis. A Dicellophilus species with 41 legbearing segments. Frontal line rounded. Groove from the metameric pore of the second maxillae reaching the posterior margin of the coxosternum. Forcipules with one small tooth on each article.

Type material. At least one female, adult.

Type locality. Ichigome , Subashiri , Mt. Fuji, Honshu ( Kishida, 1928) (transcribed from Japanese) .

Depository of type material. Unknown.

Material examined. 7 specimens: 1 male, adult (43 mm), and 1 male, subadult (25 mm), from Hirasawa, Iwasemachi, Ibaraki Pref., Honshu , 26. VI .1999, K. Ishii leg., coll. AM; 1 female, adult (70 mm), from Iwagasaki, Sawata City, Honshu , 25.X.1999, K. Ishii leg., coll. AM ; 1 male, subadult (17 mm), from Mt. Nandai, 460 m, Kasama, Ibaraki Pref., Honshu , 20. VI .1998, K. Ishii leg., coll. AM; 1 female, subadult (38 mm), from Shiobara, 900 m, Hishi, Sudamacho , Kitakomagun , Yamanashi Pref., Honshu , 1.VIII.1993, T . Tanabe leg., coll. AM; 1 male, adult (26 mm), and 1 juvenile (12 mm), from Hakonemachi, Ashigarashimogun, Kanagawa Pref., Honshu , 23. V .1986, T . Tanabe leg., coll. TT.

Description. Body length reaching at least 7 cm. Trunk yellow, without dark patches, head and forcipular segment darker. Head about 1.3–1.4 times as long as wide, frontal line uniformly rounded. Antennae 2.8–4.0 times as long as the head length, on average more elongated in males than in females. Apical sensilla about 15–20 µm long. Clypeus: a single plagula covering most of the surface, densely covered with scattered setae; areolate part without smooth insulae, with a few setae on the anterolateral corners. Labrum: posterior ala with longitudinal stripes; posterior margin of each side piece concave, sometimes convex at the medial end, with a medial tooth, with a fringe of small hairs. Buccae without setae, spiculum absent. First maxillae: anterior corners of coxosternum not projecting; internal margin of the medial projection with many setae, distal lobe subtriangular; each telopodite about 3.5 times as long as wide, curved inward. Second maxillae: telopodite with several setae and with one simple claw; groove from the metameric pore reaching the posterior margin of the coxosternum. Mandible (in a 70 mm specimen): 7 welldeveloped lamellae, first lamella with 6 teeth, average intermediate lamella with about 18 teeth; ventral surface of mandible with scales (giving a 'hairy' appearance), 'scales' more developed in the posterior part of the mandible and extending to some long processes projecting behind the last lamella. Forcipules: article I 1.1–1.2 times as long as wide, with one small distal tooth; articles II and III each with a small tooth; tarsungulum with a small basal tooth, internal margin often crenulate; teeth on articles I and III usually larger than those on article II and tarsungulum. A total of 41 legbearing segments. Sternal sulcus not furcate. Last leg bearing segment: sternum subtriangular, about 1.2– 1.3 times as long as wide. Coxae with several pores, one of them larger than the others (macropore).

Distribution in the considered area.

Nandai , Kasama (new); Shiobara , Hishi , Sudamacho (new); Hakonemachi , Ashigarashimogun (new) .

General distribution. Honshu.

Remarks. This species was first described by Kishida (1928: 300–303), who cited it as ‘ Mecistocephalus pulcher Kishida, 1925 , n. sp. ’, probably referring to the year when the holotype was collected (1925). Even if it has been overlooked by almost all subsequent authors, this name is available and valid, and not a ‘nomen oblitum’ as suggested by Shinohara (1983: 6) (see ICZN, article 23.9.1). The combination Dicellophilus pulcher was used by Shinohara (1983: 5), but he did not intend it as a valid name.

Tygarrup monoporus Shinohara, 1964 , described upon a single specimen from Manazuru (Honshu), is recognised here as a junior synonym of Dicellophilus latifrons Takakuwa, 1934 on the basis of the original description and drawings, which clearly refer to a juvenile specimen of D. pulcher . The presence of a single pore on each coxopleuron (which will develop as the ‘macropore’ in adult specimens) is typical for juvenile specimens of Dicellophilus .
