Parapsyche apicalis (Banks) View in CoL
Figures 1, 6, 18, 24–26
Arctopsyche apicalis Banks 1908: 266 View in CoL , holotype Ƥ deposited in MCZ (MCZ Type Number 11515).
Parapsyche apicalis (Banks) View in CoL . Betten 1934: 181, pl. 16 figs. 14–18, pl. 17 figs. 1–2 (3); Milne & Milne 1938: 105 –106, pl. 5 (Ƥ,3); Flint 1961: 8 –11, figs. 14–21, 29 (larva, pupa); Schmid 1968: 71, figs. 108–110 (3); Nimmo 1987: 15, figs. 31–37 (Ƥ,3); Wiggins 1996: 144 –145, fig. 7.8 (larva).
Diagnosis. The hind wing crossveins sc-r and r-rs are coincident in their insertions on R, so that they are opposite each other. The female genitalia lack paired sclerotized projections internally.
Description. Wings (Figs. 1, 6, 18, 28): fwl = 9.2–11.0 mm; µ=10.2; σ = 1.16 (N = 26). Wings sub-hyaline, infuscate with light mottling, shape typical for subfamily. Female genitalia ( Figs. 24–25): Segment IX (IX) in lateral view ( Fig. 24) relatively short in its longitudinal dimension throughout its height; anterior margin sinuous; dorsum convex and about 1/8th as long as height of segment IX, produced as prominent bulge; in caudal view ( Fig. 25) dorsum with vertex either flat or with distinct medial declivity. In caudal view ( Fig. 25), segment IX of nearly uniform width, its sides slightly sinuous. Lateral view with little evidence of articulation between segments IX and X. Segment X (X) only lightly sclerotized. Ventral surface of segment IX with medially converging pair of lightly sclerotized plates, giving “V-like” or “W-like” appearance to ventral surface, these plates visible in both uncleared and cleared specimens (e.gon.VIII of Nielsen 1980, vulval scale of Nimmo 1987, vulvar scale of Schmid 1998). Pair of elliptical setal patches (sp) mediolaterally on posterior vertical face of dorsum of segment IX, setae in each patch in 2 rows, not convergent apically ( Figs. 24–26).
Distribution. Widely distributed in the eastern United States and Canada, as far west as Wisconsin ( Nimmo 1987), and south into the mountains of eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina , northwestern South Carolina , and northeastern Georgia.
