Stresemann, E. (1922): Neue Formen aus dem papuanischen Gebiet. Journal für Ornithologie 70(2/3): 405 [405–408].

Now Cicinnurus regius coccineifrons Rothschild, 1896 View in CoL . See Mees 1964: 34–35, 1982: 170–172, Frith and Beehler 1998: 410, Dickinson 2003: 517; nec Cracraft 1992: 32, who upgraded similis to a monotypic species.

HOLOTYPE [not located in 1949–1950 and in April 2005]: ZMB 32224. Adult male. Loc.: Stephansort [= Ato, Astrolabe Bay, Papua New Guinea, 5°24' S, 145°43' E]: Date .. Coll.: Kunzmann. [Skin; data from publication]. GoogleMaps

COMMENTS: Stresemann, whose note was published in July 1922, accidentally received priority for this name by referring to Neumann's manuscript, which appeared in print on 1 September 1922 ( Neumann 1922: 236). By 1949–1950, Meise could not trace the single specimen and it still cannot be located despite intensive search. No biographic data on Kunzmann and his New Guinea trip(s) could be obtained.
