Genus Chiasmalges Gaud and Atyeo

Chiasmalges hirsutus ( Trouessart, 1899)

Hosts and distribution. This species was described ex Aratinga solstitialis (Linnaeus) , (type host), A. canicularis (Linnaeus) , Pyrrhura leucotis (Kuhl) , P. picta (Müller) , Nandayus nenday (Vieillot) , Pionites melanocephala (Linnaeus) , and Brotogeris chiriri (Vieillot) ( Psittaciformes , Psittacidae ) from Guyana, Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico ( Trouessart 1899), without indication of the origin of which host specimen belonged to which country. Later on, it was recovered ex Furnarius torridus Sclater and Salvin ( Passeriformes , Furnariidae ), Megarhynchus pitangua (Linnaeus) ( Passeriformes , Tyrannidae ), and Pipra filicauda Spix ( Passeriformes , Pipridae ), without other data ( Bonnet 1924b).

Remarks. As mentioned by Valim et al. (2011) the last three hosts are likely to represent either contamination or misidentification of Mesalgoides specimens. Of the hosts mentioned by Trouessart (1899), only Pionites melanocephalus and Pyrrhura picta are in the present territory of Colombia. Since the hosts listed originally for C. hirsutus belong to different parrot genera, it is quite probable that this mite in the sense of Trouessart (1899) is a complex of closely related species.

Material examined. Ex Aratinga wagleri (Gray) ( Psittaciformes , Psittacidae ): 1 male, Dept. Valle del Cauca: Jamundí, 1000 m, 23 January 1957, coll. J. Durán, UV No. 1538. New host record.

Hosts and distribution. This species was described ex Aratinga holochlora (Sclater) from Mexico (Nuevo Leon) ( Gaud & Atyeo 1967).
