Description ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 10–23 )

Body length 2.8–3.1 mm. Bristles yellow (including bristles on basal section of costa). Acrostichal bristle present. Scutum yellow with one pair of supra­alar spots and one pair on spots on anterior margin of scutum; posterior margin of scutum with slight infuscation in front of scutellum that is sometimes dark and semi­circular. Scutellum and laterotergites dark brown with one pair of yellow stripes lateral to scutellum on anatergite. Pleuron and legs light yellow with fore coxa white. Head mostly yellow; frons dirty yellow; head below antenna dirty white to brownish; one pair of stripes present on back of head; ocellar spot brown; gena and parafacial silvery tomentose. Abdomen brown with tergites 1 and 2 yellow; cerci and surstylus white. Wing lightly clouded on distal 1/3 (darkest around R 2+3); distance between crossveins distinctly longer than length of posterior cross­vein.

Female

Externally as described for male, except terminalia yellow and tergite 2 brown.

Externally as described for C. pleuralis except cerci longer by ¼ and distal emargination narrower; surstylus 2/3 as high with posterior margin thin, membranous and sinuate. Hypandrial complex as described for C. pleuralis except anterior protuberance on pregonite thin and pointed with setulae present only on anterior margin.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 69 View FIGURES 67–70 )

As described for C. synneura except as follows: spermatheca slightly more sclerotized; subterminal flagellum six times length of ventral receptacle.

Distribution: Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, United States (FL) (Map 5).

Holotype: UNITED STATES. FL: Everglades N.P., Dade Co., H.V. Weems, 20.x.1954 (1♂, USNM).

Comments: The notal pattern of Craspedochaeta weemsi most closely resembles that of the Brazilian species C. festiva and C. pacaraima , but the scutellum and laterotergites are entirely brown, the anterior margin of the scutum is brown with a deep medial emargination, the surstylus has a thin posterior margin, and the pregonite has a thin anterodistal process.
