Cnemidothrix malekulae Paulian,1945: 184 View in CoL (as ssp. of penicilliger View in CoL ) n. syn.

DESCRIPTION. — This weevil retains its species status with quite some hesitation. The main difference from C. barbipes is the overall appearance. Pitted grey or whitish scales obscure the shiny integument to render it rather dull, particularly on the dorsal surface of the elytra. Density and size of granules on prothorax and elytra, and presence or absence of a median groove on the rostrum, on which Paulian (1945) and Marshall (1956) relied a good deal to separate species, probed to be too variable and, consequently, of little or no use when dealing with a material as abundant as the one that was available for this study.

Length: 6.0- 8.5 mm.

TYPE MATERIAL. — No syntype specimens present. Identified non-type specimens with BPBM, NZAC, SRFP .

MATERIAL EXAMINED. — Vanuatu: Maewo , Aoba , Malekula , Epi, Emae, Efate. 336 specimens .

REMARKS. — The specimens from Aoba and one-quarter of the specimens from Malekula have long hairs also across

the elytral declivity as C. barbipes has, but not quite as dense.
