DESCRIPTION. — Body deep, dorsally and ventrally strongly convex; integument with bluish sheen on elytra; segment 2 of funicle as long as the three following segments combined; punctation on pronotum coarse, in part transversely coalescent; striae deep, sulcate, rather distinct to the end; stria 10 with about ten puncta at base; fore tibiae with small tooth, others with a conspicuously larger tooth.

Male: tergite 8 submembranous except for a reddish brown band of anastomosing wavy lines against transverse ridge; remainder similar to S. caledonicus (Figs 128, 129), equally strongly sculptured and with some longer setae on upper corner. Sternite 9 as in Fig.122. Aedeagus as in Figs 120, 0.155 mm long, extending deeply into thoracic cavity; body 1.3 x longer than apodemes, 4 x longer than wide, with slightly asymmetric apex. Basal sclerite distinct.

Female: tergite 7 as in Fig. 123, tergite 8 as in Fig. 124. Sternite 8 as in Fig. 125. Genitalia as in Fig. 126, with a rather short spermathecal duct, this inserting at apex of bursa.

Length: 2.3-2.9 mm.

TYPE MATERIAL. — Two syntypes: one each in Paris and Brusselles. Lectotype female, 2.6 x 2 mm, red disc, type [in Pic’s handwriting], kanalensis Perroud, Kanal, MNHN. Paralectotype: IRSN. Identified specimens with BPBM, IRSN, MNHN, MNHW, NZAC, SRFP .

MATERIAL EXAMINED. — New Caledonia. 1 male, W of Po- nr La Foa , 2.XI.1999, on Syzygium cumini, S. Cazeres ; 2 males, 1 nérihouen, 29-30.VII.1971, J. L. Gressitt; 2 females, Canala female, Pocquereux nr La Foa , 6.XI.2004, on Syzygium cumini, (Kanala), 1850 ’s, X. Montrouzier; 1 female, Col des Roussettes , G. Kuschel; 1 male, 1 female, Yahoué , 22.I.1963, G. Kuschel; 1 25 km, 6.II.1963, N. L. H. Krauss; 1 female, Aoupinié , 21°11’S, male, Tonghoué, Coll. Fauvel; 1 male, Mt. HOSTPLANTS. — Syzygium cumini (Myrtaceae) .

ETYMOLOGY. — The epithet ‘kanalénsis’ refers to Canala (or Kanala), the type locality of the species.

REMARKS. — A certain rhynchitine-like appearance misled Perroud for placing it in Rhynchites (Attelabidae) .
