DESCRIPTION. — A well-defined species by the characters given in the key. Rather variable in the density of scaly covering on the elytra and in the amount of exposure of the integument. Males appear black to the naked eye but are sparsely squamose; females are abundantly squamose but usually showing a lattice-like pattern.

Length: 11.5-22.5 mm.

TYPE MATERIAL. — 1) E. chevrolati : two syntypes present. Lectotype female, 21.0 x 9.9 mm, ‘ Elytrocallus chevrolati Montr., Houaïlou, Nouvelle Calédonie, Coll. Fauvel’, IRSN. Paralectotype female, Coll. Chevrolat, NHRM. 2) E. clathratus : holotype female, 18.5 x 8.0 mm, ‘N. Caledonia, Deyrolle, Elytrocallus clathratus n. sp., K. Günther det.’, SMT.D.

MATERIAL EXAMINED. — New Caledonia. Chutes de la Madeleine ( Plain de Lacs ), Col de Mouirange , Forêt de Thy , Houaïlou, La Coulée, Mt. d’Or , Mt. Koghi, Mt. Mou, Nouméa, Pindal, Plum, Rivière Bleue, St Louis. 55 specimens .

REMARKS. — The syntype specimen illustrated in the original work is selected as lectotype. The paralectotype in Coll. Chevrolat, Stockholm, is the largest specimen seen of the species; it is partly abraded .
