Sphaerorhinus setiger Fairmaire, 1849: 507 View in CoL .

Platysimus setiger View in CoL – Marshall 1956: 119.

DESCRIPTION. — Male. Elytra sexually not differing except for semierect setae being shorter and more curved; aedeagal apex long.

Female: not distinguishable from other species with parallel-sided elytra.

Length: 3.5-4.5 mm.

TYPE MATERIAL. — No type material present .

MATERIAL EXAMINED. — Tonga: Tongatapu. 12 specimens .

HOSTPLANTS. — Ten specimens were swept from Scaevola frutescens , two from Excoecaria agallocha .

ETYMOLOGY. — The specific name ‘sétiger’ means bristle-bearing.

REMARKS. — P. setiger was described from Tongatapu, but, because the size of 6 mm given for the species in the original publication is well above that of the specimens studied, doubts remain whether the current interpretation of the species is correct. The original specimen was from Coll. Jekel, where it probably fell victim to dermestids as this was the case with most of that collection (pers. comm. Ferdinando Solari). Specimens from other islands of the Tonga group are in agreement with typical P. insularis .
