Sciaphilus asperatus (Bonsdorff, 1785) ( Fig. 1 )

Diagnosis. Body oblong-ovate; integument of head, prothorax, and elytra black, femora dark brown, tibiae, tarsi, and antennae castaneus. Surface of body covered with suboval, flattened, golden yellowish or brownish scales ( Fig. 1 ), larger and denser on head, rostrum, and pronotum, smaller and sparser on elytra and legs. Basal margin of epistome, pregena, and funicle with setiform, semi-erect setae; setae thinner, shorter, and sparser on legs. Each elytral interstria with row of erect, subulate, apically tapering, reclinate pale brown scales. Frons nearly flat; vertex convex, interocular pit small but visible. Eyes suboval, convex. Rostrum subconical; epifrons deeply depressed medially, with thin, short median carina; epistome subtriangular, concave; ventral margin of antennal scrobe visible dorsally; antennae inserted near apex of rostrum. Scape long, thin in basal 3/4, suddenly swollen in apical fourth. Funicular segments 1–4 subconical, 5–7 submoniliform; club fusiform. Prothorax subcylindrical, sides slightly swollen in middle, basal margin straight, anterior margin weakly raised. Elytra oblong-oval, strongly convex dorsally and laterally, obliquely rounded at shoulders; interstriae slightly convex. Femora rather slender, toothed at mid-length; tibiae nearly straight; tarsomere 3 wide; claws connate at base.

Russia (European territory; recorded also for western Siberia ( Krivets 2002, 2007; Krivets and Vecher 1999), where it was introduced in the Siberian Botanical Garden in Tomsk) and Kazakhstan (east of the Ural River) ( Legalov 2010; Alonso-Zarazaga et al. 2017) [but we have not seen material from the latter area); Ireland ( Morris 1966 /1967); Turkey (new country record) ( Fig. 2 ). Nearctic Region (introduced): ‘North America’ ( Pinski et al. 2005; Coyle et al. 2008, 2014); Canada ( Webster et al. 2012).

Most of the examined specimens in our collections were collected in the forest and forest-steppe natural zones. The northern boundary of the distribution of S. asperatus in Russia is unknown; its northernmost records are those from Onezhskiy District of Arkhangel’ sk Province, near Verkhov’ ye Village, 8–15 km upstream of the mouth of the Mud’ yuga River, right tributary of the Onega River. This species is missing from the short list of weevils of the Komi Republic ( Sedykh 1974), nor is it recorded for the lower Ob’ River area based on longterm investigations in four sites in the northernmost taiga and southern tundra zone (Ol’ shvang and Bogacheva 1990). All other species of Sciaphilus are distributed in the southwestern part of the genus’ range, and at least some of them are bisexual, as already noted.

Host Plants. Only Primula officinalis L. ( Primulaceae ) is verified ( Hoffmann 1950; Scherf 1964) as a larval host. Adults feed on many arboreal and herbaceous species. We collected an adult on Primula veris L. in forest habitat in the Black Sea region of Turkey.
