Note:— The MA specimen was labelled as a spontaneous plant by Pau. In Herb. BC there is also a specimen from the same locality and date, but with the indication “cultivated” ( BC 23132 !) and so, not considered as type material. This cultivated gathering was distributed in the Sennen exsiccata Plantes d’Espagne 1934 nº 9181 (BCSennen 80823!, MA 51285 !). Although Byalt in 2005 labelled MA 51284 as isotype and MA 51285 as type, only the spontaneous plants should be considered original material .

Rejdali & Fennane (2007) do not accept subspecies in S. arborescens , and include S. maireana in the synonymy of this species, although Rejdali (2002b) previously accepted S. maireana at the species rank. The main difference between these taxa is the size of the lower verticillaster, up to 12 mm wide in S. arborescens , and more than 15 mm in S. maireana .

Specimens from Morocco are better preserved than the one from Algeria. Among the Moroccan material, the selected lectotype is the one from Herb. MA. The MA and P specimens were identified as S. patula subsp. patula by Jeanmonod in 1983 and 1985, respectively. The accepted name follows Talavera (2002b) .
