Notes:— Carrasco (1975) records this taxon as “ Statice plantaginea var. masguindalii ”. The GDA specimen was labelled as syntype by Vizoso in 2013. Since there are two sheets at Herb. BC, the one that includes more samples is here selected as lectotype.

1 Arnebia rifea Pau & Sennen in Sennen, Campagn. Bot.: 129 (1936a), nom. nud.

=?

Notes:— Sennen (1936a) reports this name without providing any description or diagnosis nor locality, in the list of plants collected during the North Moroccan campaign in 1934. It should be noted that the only species of Arnebia Forssk. present in Morocco is A. decumbens Coss. & Kralik , which only appears in southern desert areas.

1,2 Artemisia gallica subsp. maroccana Pau View in CoL in Sennen & Mauricio, Cat. Fl. Rif Orient.: 61 (1934), nom. nud.

= Artemisia herba-alba Asso View in CoL

Notes:—The subspecies of Pau is recorded in Blanca (2002), Greuter (2006), and Ouyahya (2014) with different criteria: Blanca (2002) and Greuter (2006) synonymized it under Artemisia caerulescens subsp. gallica (Willd.) K.Perss., and Ouyahya (2014) under A. herba-alba s.l. According to APD (2020) the Moroccan A. gallica Willd. should be attributed to A. barrelieri Besser , a taxon included in A. herba-alba s.l. following Ouyahya (2014). However, other authors such as Greuter (2006) and Benedí (2019) consider A. caerulescens subsp. gallica , A. barrelieri , and A. herba-alba as distinct taxa, all of them present in Morocco. It should be noted that in the original publication the species is indicated with doubt “ Artemisia gallica Willd. ?” and two localities are mentioned: “Hemis de Tensaman” and “Budinar”. There are some specimens labelled as subsp. maroccana from Tensaman and distributed in Sennen’s exsiccata Plantes d’Espagne 1930 nº 7753 (BC 141877! and BC-Sennen 825845!) that were identified as A. herba-alba by Blanca in 1996.

1,3 Asperula hirsuta [unranked] glabrescens Pau & Font Quer in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1927 nº 602 (1928), in sched.

= Asperula hirsuta Desf.

Ind. loc.:—“ Hab. in declivibus calc. littoris rhiphaei, c. Yebel Malmusi (Bocoya), 100 m. alt.; 6 majii” Lectotype (designated here):—In declivibus calc. littoris rhiphaei, c. Yebel Malmusi (Bocoya), 100 m, 6 May 1927, Font Quer 602-1927 (lectotype BC 27600 ! [https://www.ibb.csic.es/herbari/ JPEG / BC27600 .jpg]; isolectotypes BCN 74171 View Materials !, MA 117079 !, MPU 006381 View Materials [photo!])

Notes:—The BCN specimen was labelled as syntype. The MA specimen was revised in 2000 by Ortega Olivencia who identified three samples as A. hirsuta var. hirsuta and another one as A. hirsuta var. rhiphaea Ortega Oliv. & Devesa. These varieties differ in the pubescence of the corolla ( Ortega Olivencia & Devesa 2004), but not in the pubescence of the leaves [the diagnostic character of the taxon, according to Pau & Font Quer (in Font Quer 1928)].

1,3 Asperula riphaeatlantica Pau & Font Quer in Sennen & Mauricio, Cat. Fl. Rif Orient.: 53 (1934), nom. nud.

= Asperula hirsuta Desf. View in CoL

Notes:—This species name was published without any description, with the only indication of the locality “Tidiguin”.Although APD (2020) indicates for this species “syn. incertaine” there exists a specimen from Tidiguin labelled as Asperula riphaeatlantica (BC-Sennen 838981!), identified as A. hirsuta by Pérez-Prieto in 2017.

1 Astragalus epiglottis f. intermedius Pau in Mem. Real Soc. Esp. Hist. Nat. 12: 317 (1924a)

= Astragalus epiglottis L.

Ind. loc.:—“ Tánger ”

Holotype:— Tanger, April 1921, Pau s.n. ( MA 66536 ! [http://colecciones.rjb.csic.es/#cardAdv. php?CatalogNumber=MA-01-00066536])

Notes:—The specimen was identified as Astragalus epiglottis by Podlech in 1989. The accepted name follows Podlech (1999).

1,2,3 Astragalus incanus var. stenocarpus Pau & Sennen in Sennen & Mauricio, Cat. Fl. Rif Orient.: 36 (1934)

Astragalus incanus L. subsp. incanus

Ind. loc.:—“Ain-Zora”

Lectotype (designated here):— Maroc: Metalza , Aïn-Zora, 1250 m, 26 May 1933, Sennen & Mauricio 8776 (lectotype MA 67499 ! [http://colecciones.rjb.csic.es/#cardAdv.php?CatalogNumber=MA-01-00067499]; isolectotype BC 141765-1 !)

Notes:—This name is considered a nomen nudum by Romo (2002a), although the publication of Sennen & Mauricio (1934) includes a diagnosis in Spanish, indicating that the legumes are narrower than those of A. incanus var. pinguefactus Pau.According to Art. 39.1 ( Turland et al. 2018) names published before 1935 do not necessarily need a Latin diagnosis to be validly published. The original material was distributed in Sennen’s exsiccata Plantes d’Espagne 1933. The MA specimen includes two original labels with some remarks on the morphology of the variety (one by Sennen and another by Pau), and was identified as Astragalus incanus subsp. incanus by Podlech in 1990. The BC specimen was identified as A. incanus subsp. incurvus (Desf.) Maire by Romo in 1997. Although Romo (2002a), Ibn Tattou (2007a), and APD (2020) distinguish subsp. incurvus and subsp. incanus based on the shape and pigmentation of legumes, these characters have no taxonomic value according to Podlech (1999).

2,3 Astragalus incurvus var. pinguefactus Pau in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1927 nº 330 (1928), in sched.

Astragalus incanus L. subsp. incanus

Ind. loc.:—“Hab. in aridis juxta Targuist, solo schistoso, 1050 m. alt.; 23 majii”

Lectotype (designated here):—In aridis juxta Targuist, solo schistoso, 1050 m., 23 May 1927, Font Quer 330- 1927 (lectotype BC 17387 ! [https://www.ibb.csic.es/herbari/ JPEG / BC17387 .jpg]; isolectotypes BCN 16383 View Materials [photo!], GDA 33414 View Materials [photo!], MA 67501 !, MPU 006304 View Materials [photo!])

Notes:—The taxon is mentioned in Carrasco (1975) as Astragalus incanus var. pinguefactus . The GDA specimen was labelled as syntype by Vizoso in 2013. The BC specimen was identified as A. incanus subsp. incurvus by Romo in 1997 and the MA specimen as A. incanus subsp incanus by Podlech in 1990. See the notes under the previous taxon for the criteria followed for the accepted name.

1,3 Astragalus stenorrhinus Pau in Cavanillesia 1: 141 (1929a)

= Astragalus echinatus Murr.

Ind. loc.:—“ E. JAHANDIEZ, Pl. marocc, no. 23 (1827)”

Lectotype (designated by Podlech 1994: 156):—Zaer: Marchand, 400 m, 22 April 1927, Jahandiez 23 (lectotype MA 66713 ! [http://colecciones.rjb.csic.es/#cardAdv.php?CatalogNumber=MA-01-00066713]; isolectotypes LD 2090551 [photo!], MPU 008968 View Materials [photo!]*, P 00368089 [photo!])

Notes:— Pau (1929a) cites erroneously the year of collection as 1827, instead of 1927. The MA specimen was identified as Astragalus echinatus by Podlech in 1989. Podlech (1994) cited the MPU specimen as isotype.

1,3 Avena hirsuta var. sallentiana Pau View in CoL in Bol. Soc. Aragonesa Ci. Nat. 17: 133 (1918)

Avena sterilis View in CoL L. subsp. sterilis View in CoL

Ind. loc.:—“Tifasor; y fueron recogidas desde el día 10 al 30 de Julio del año 1915”

Holotype:— Tifasor ( Melilla), July 1915, Aterido s.n. ( BC 68088 ! [https://www.ibb.csic.es/herbari/ JPEG / BC68088 .jpg])

Note:—The specimen was identified as Avena sterilis by three different specialists: Paunero in 1957, Romero Zarco in 1996, and Pyke in 2006 (the two latter as subsp. sterilis ). However, APD (2020) synonymizes the variety of Pau under Avena barbata Pott ex Link subsp. barbata . After examination of the holotype the previous identification as A. sterilis subsp. sterilis is confirmed.

1,2 Bellevalia dubia f. riphaena Pau in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1929 nº 72 (1930a), in sched.

Bellevalia dubia var. riphaena (Pau) Maire & Weiller

Lectotype (designated here):—In arenosis maritimis c. Ixdain (Bocoia), 120 m, 27 February 1929, Font Quer 72-1929 (lectotype BCN 71575 View Materials [photo!] [http://www.ub.edu/cedocbiv/herbarivirt/119814]; isolectotypes BC 981768 View Materials !, MA 21987 !, MPU 006708 View Materials !)

Notes:— Valdés (2002a) and Fennane (2014b) accept this taxon at the varietal rank as Bellevalia dubia var. riphaena , although APD (2020) synonymizes this variety under B. dubia Rchb. Different varieties within B. dubia differ by the length of the pedicels. The BCN specimen is selected as lectotype, because it is complete and in better condition than the BC one.

1 Biscutella apula f. reticulata Pau in Vidal, Asoc. Esp. Progr. Ci. Congr. Cádiz 6: 137 (1928)

= Biscutella baetica Boiss. & Reut.

Ind. loc.:—“-”

Holotype:—Xauen, 10 June 1921, Vidal s.n. ( MA 44491 ! [http://colecciones.rjb.csic.es/#cardAdv. php?CatalogNumber=MA-01-00044491])

Notes:—The form name was published by Vidal (1928) without mention of locality. In that paper, the author reports different taxa proposed by Pau from Moroccan plants collected by himself between 1920 and 1926. This specimen was identified as B. baetica by Guinea in 1965.

1,2,3 Biscutella montana var. ajmasiana Pau in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1928 nº 121 (1929), in sched.

= Biscutella atlantica (Maire) Greuter & Burdet

Ind. loc.:—“Hab. in saxosis calc. montis Kalaa, 1000 m. alt.; 13 majii”

Lectotype (designated here):—In saxosis calc. montis Kalaa, 1000 m, 13 May 1928, Font Quer 121-1928 (lectotype BC 4973 ! Notes:—The GDA specimen was labelled as syntype by Vizoso in 2013. Dobignard (2009) cites the MPU specimen as isotype. The MA specimen was identified as “ B. megacarpea var. atlantica ” (unpublished combination) by Hernández-Bermejo & Clemente-Muñoz in 1985 and the GDA specimen as B. atlantica by Crespo 2006. However, the BC specimen was identified as B. sempervirens L. by Grau in 1999, due to the fact that, in the sense of Grau (1999), there are no differences between B. sempervirens and B. atlantica .
