Limonium lucentinum

The protologue of Limonium lucentinum includes a diagnosis in German followed by a complete description in Latin, a brief comment regarding the epithet “Von dem Namen der dem locus classicus benachbarten Stadt Lucentum (= Alicante)” [From the name of the city of Lucentum (= Alicante), near the type locality], the provenance “Habitat in salsuginosis prope La Mata circa Lucentum (Alicante) in Hispania australi”, and the type: “ Holotypus: La Mata, 29 August 1964, Freitag ( TSB)” ( Pignatti 1971: 363−364) .

The specimen cited in the protologue by Pignatti (1971: 363−364) was mentioned by Erben (1978: 425) “Typus: “La Mata, 29. August 1964 ”, Freitag (TSB)!”. Unfortunately, the holotype of this name is apparently lost, since it was found neither at TSB nor at RO (A. Tilia pers. comm.). However, we have located an isotype preserved at GOET (barcode GOET009513) which bears two plants, with some leaves and flowers, and an envelope with fragments of the inflorescences and leaves. This specimen matches the traditional concept and current usage of the name Limonium lucentinum . We have not traced any other original specimen in any of the consulted herbaria. Therefore, the GOET specimen is designated here as lectotype of the name and matches the current concept and usage of the name (see Erben 1993, Crespo & Lledó 1998).
