Remarks. The original species description is short and vague ( Olivier 1790) and the referenced drawing is also not very detailed ( Stoll 1788). The status of the species needs to be investigated in detail so that the taxon can be applied reliably to specimens.

Distribution. The species has been reported from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Suriname, Uruguay, and South America ( Metcalf 1963a; Sanborn 2013, 2020d; Sanborn & Heath 2014; Nunes et al. 2023). References to Mexico have been questioned ( Sanborn 2007b). Ruffinelli (1970) reported the species from San Carlos, Cabo Polonio, and Carrasco in southern Uruguay.
