Etymology

From Greek, poly­, many and akantha, thorn, referring to the pseudospurs on the fore tarsi.

Diagnostic characters

The new species can be distinguished from other members of the genus by having pairs of pseudospurs on fore ta 1 –ta 4 and by the unique color pattern of the abdomen.

Discription

Male (n = 52). Total length 1.39–2.15, 1.8 mm. Wing length 0.8–1.28, 1.06 mm. Total length/wing length 1.44–1.86, 1.7. Wing length/length of profemur 2.56–3.63, 3.03.

Coloration. Head including antenna brown. Thorax almost uniformly brown. Tergites I–V yellow, tergites VI–VIII brown, hypopygium brown ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 3–6 ). Legs pale brown, femur and apex of all tibiae with brown ring. Wing without marks.

Head. AR 0.35–0.65, 0.53. Temporal setae 12, including 10 verticals and 2 postorbitals. Clypeus with 10–23, 15 setae. Tentorium 80–130, 111 µm long; 15–25, 20 µm wide. Palpomere 1–5 lengths (in µm): 15–35, 30; 20–35, 26; 48–80, 67; 80–120, 103; 110–195, 144.

Wing ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 3–6 ). VR 0.61–0.86, 0.69. Brachiolum with 2 long setae. Squama with 14–25, 19 setae.

Thorax. Antepronotals 2–4, 4; dorsocentrals 5–9, 7; acrostichals 12–21, 17; prealars 8–14, 11. Scutellum with 6–10, 7 setae.

Legs. Spur on fore tibiae 20–43, 34 µm long; apex of fore ta 1 –ta 4 each with 2 pseudospurs ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 3–6 ). Spur on mid tibiae 33–48, 41 µm long, spur on hind tibiae 38–58, 47 µm long; comb on hind tibia with 8 short setae. Lengths (in µm) and proportions of legs as in Table 1.

Hypopygium ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 3–6 ). Tergite IX straight, with 3 setae laterally on each side. Anal point conical. Gonocoxite 65–100, 79 µm long, cylindrical, outer margin convex with 9 setae. Gonostylus 43–70, 57 µm long, simple and slender. HR 1.08–1.67, 1.38. HV 1.73–3.48, 3.12.

Female, pupa and larva: Unknown.

Distribution

The species was collected in the Fujian, Guangdong, Guizhou, Hainan and Yunnan provinces in Oriental China .
