Aspicera buffingtoni Ros-Farré & Pujade-Villar n. sp.

( Figs 2b View FIGURE 2 , 18a & b View FIGURE 18 )

Type material: (1♂). HOLOTYPE male ( UB) 30/IV/1984, Fournols (Hérault), FRANCE, Quercus pubescens, J.M. Maldes leg.

Diagnosis. Aspicera buffingtoni is similar to A. hartigi , both having scutellar foveae with at least two longitudinal carinae that continue onto scutellar disc, scutellar pits very deep. In A. hartigi scutum is transversely carinate while in A.buffingtoni it is coriaceous.

Description

Length. Male 3.10 mm.; female unknown.

Coloration. Head, mesosoma, metasoma and antennae black. Leg dark brown, except coxa and trocanter black.

Head. Frons coriaceous, rugose. Lateral frontal carinae curved, sinuous near ocelli. Area between compound eye and lateral frontal carinae with noticeable transverse carinae. Gena in lateral view rounded, not expanded, coriaceous, rugose. Vertex flat, coriaceous, sharply rugose. Ocelli slightly prominent. Occiput coriaceous, with short longitudinal carinae dorsally and fine transverse carinae in basal 2/3.

Antenna. Filiform. F1 sharply excavated. Antennal formula: 3.5(3): 2(2.5): 5(2.5): 4(2): 4(2): 4(2): 4(2): 5(2): 4(2): 4(2.5): 4(2): 4(2): 4(2): 5(2).

Mesosoma. Lateral surface of pronotum coriaceous, weakly carinate transversely on dorsal and ventral 1/3, weakly rugose centrally. Subpronotal plate not projected, dorsal margin with scattered setae. Scutum coriaceous. Antero-admedian lines smooth, reaching 1/3–1/2 scutum length, parallel, stronger than median ridge. Notauli and median mesoscutal sulcus with transverse carinae. Area between notauli not prominent in lateral view. Parascutal sulcus smooth, pubescent anteriorly, ending near anterior end of notauli. Mesopleuron alutaceous, with oblique carinae on ventral area and anterior 1/3, smooth on dorsoposterior area. Scutellum 0.83 times scutum length, emarginate on posterior 2/3. Scutellar foveae with longitudinal carinae, these carinae together with interfoveal carina continuous along dorsal face of scutellar disc until beginning of scutellar spine, scutellar pits deep. Scutellar disc coriaceous, longitudinally carinate, swollen posterior to scutellar foveae, gradually sloping towards basis of scutellar spine in lateral view. Scutellar spine small, 0.36 times length of scutellar disc, longitudinally striate, rather blunt, straight in lateral view.

Wing. Radial cell 1.90 times longer than wide. Wing pubescence slightly reduced. Marginal pubescence present, short. R1 long. R2 curved. Rs+M absent.

Derivatio nominis. Dedicated to Matthew Buffington, colleague and friend to the authors; we are very thankful for his patience on the loans of the material studied in this work.
