This is the largest and most widespread genus of Bromeliaceae . Its species occur from the U.S.A. to Patagonia, including all centers of diversity of Bromeliaceae . It encompasses 778 species (Gouda et al. cont. updated) together with the resurrection and new combinations proposed here.
