Distribution in the Balkans. Bulgaria: Rhodopi Mts., near Batak (type locality), Rhodopi Mts.: Syutkya Peak, near Slashten, near Breshten, Bachkovo Monastery, Chepelare, Yagodina, Dolna Karanska Dupka Cave near Yagodina, Mihalkovo, Studenets Hut near Snezhanka Peak, Beglika Dam, Debrashtitsa, Asenovgrad Distr., Martsiganitsa Hut, Gyola Area, Gargini Dupki Cave; Vitosha Mt: Zlatni Mostove, Zheleznitsa, Chuipetlovo; Rila Mts.: Rila Monastery Natural Park; Slavyanka Mt.; Sredna Gora Mts.: Koprivshtitsa Railway station, near Panagyurishte, Banichan, Petrich ( Vagalinski & Stoev 2007); Greece: Chalkidike, W shore of the Volvi Sea ( Strasser 1967), East Macedonia and Thrace ( Strasser 1974; Golovatch & Kondeva 1992).
World distribution. Known only from the East Balkans.
Remarks. Our material is in agreement with Strasser’s (1967) observations, although the body colour is more brownish. In the original description Verhoeff discussed a special gynandromorph individual of M. rhodopinum , i.e. an adult female with cyphopods and eggs but also with male gonopods ( Verhoeff 1928). Gynandromorph females are rarely published (e.g. Bigler 1920, Verhoeff 1910a), neither did such individual occur in our material, even among any Megaphyllum individuals. Although not a well-developed gynandromorph, a strangely developed individual was found in M. austriacum (see above).
