Diagnosis (from Scarpa et al. 2017, amended): Proseriata Dolichogynoducta with an encapsulated brain and a gut diverticle that extends over the brain; precerebral area well developed. With intraepidermal nuclei, and almost completely ciliated body. With or without dorsal, longitudinally arranged cnidosacs; cnidae may be loosely stored in the posterior part of the gut. With long, horizontal pharynx, with a proximal glandular section, in cnidarian-feeders; with short, collar shaped, vertically oriented pharynx in non-cnidarian feeders. Ovaria in front of vitellaria, either postcerebral or just in front of pharynx. With separate and far-apart male and female pores. May have prepenial or postpenial vagina and bursa. With a genito-intestinal connection close to female pore. Copulatory organ with stylet and atrial needles, or only with a stylet. With a distinct prostate vesicle, horizontal, anteriorly oriented, or curved to about 180°. With one or two seminal vesicles. May have an accessory glandular organ with needles associated with the male atrium.
