Bhatti (1990) designated Chirothrips madagassus zur Strassen (1961) as the type species of Oelschlaegera , and distinguished the genus from Chirothrips and all related genera by “presence of a broad, continuous posteromarginal flange on abdominal terga as well as sterna, and by the chaetotaxy of abdominal sterna, each with only 2 pairs of setae along the posterior margin”. The concept of Oelschlaegera was revised by Nakahara & Foottit (2012), who also transferred to Oelschlaegera from Chirothrips two other species C. priesneri and C. ruthae . They indicated that the above three species are unusual within the group in having stout conical setae on the head and mesonotum, but unfortunately no illustrations were provided. The type species, madagassus , was described from Madagascar, and ruthae from Democratic Republic of Congo. In contrast, priesneri was described from Sao Paulo in Brazil, although Mound & Marullo (1996) suggested that, like so many Chirothrips group species, priesneri may have been dispersed artificially, and have come originally from Africa.
