Peltonotus brunnipennis Benderitter

( Figs. 38a–c View FIGURES 37–39 , 51 View FIGURES 51–55 , 66 View FIGURE 66 )

Peltonotus brunnipennis Benderitter, 1934:255–256 . Holotype male at MNHN with label data: a) "Kinabalu N. Borneo" (handwritten), b) " Peltonotus brunnipennis TYPE" (handwritten, orange paper), c) " Peltonotus brunnipennis E. Benderitter , det. Bend TYPE" (handwritten and typeface), d) " Peltonotus brunnipennis Benderitter m Holotype " (our red holotype label). Male genitalia and maxilla cardmounted. Holotype missing both foretarsi. Benderitter (1934) stated that the description was based on a unique specimen, therefore the holotype is fixed by monotypy.

Description (males=2, female=1). Length 14.5–16.9 mm. Widest width 7.9–8.5 mm. Color: Male: Head, pronotum, scutellum, propygidium, pygidium, and venter shining, castaneous; elytra reddishorange or black with iridescent bloom. Female: Head, pronotum, scutellum, propygidium, pygidium, and venter shining castaneous to black; elytra black with iridescent blue bloom. Head: Surface of frons with base impunctate, middle frons to apex densely punctate; punctures ocellate or semilunar, not setigerous on disc. Surface of clypeus densely punctate; punctures ocellate or semilunar, not setigerous on disc. Clypeus weakly bowed laterally; apex truncate, corners square, beaded; bead at middle weakly arcuate posteriorad. Labrum deeply, narrowly emarginate at middle. Mandibles of male and female rounded laterally, inner apex with 2 weak teeth. Mentum with apical half rounded, notched at middle; palpomere 2 dorsoventrally flattened, twice width of palpomere 1, setose; setae dense, moderately long, rufous, weakly curled at apex, flattened. Maxilla: mala with lamellate setal brush; stipes with setae dense, long, flattened, weakly curled at apex; palpomere 2 with internomedial bump. Antennal club subequal to segments 2–7. Pronotum: Bead lacking anterior to scutellum. Surface moderately densely punctate, punctures simple. Lateral margin lacking long setae. Elytral sutural length: About 5.0 times length of scutellum. Elytron: Surface with 5 poorly developed, punctate, longitudinal striae between suture and humerus; punctures moderate in size, moderately dense. Intervals with similar sculpturing. Epipleuron of female in ventral view expanded, incised at apex; in dorsal view expansion moderately developed ( Fig. 51 View FIGURES 51–55 ). Propygidium: Surface moderately densely punctate; punctures ocellate, not setigerous. Pygidium: Surface moderately densely punctate; punctures ocellate, not setigerous. Venter: Prosternal keel subtriangular; apex produced to middle of protrochanter, rounded. Legs: Foretibia of male tridentate with weak basal tooth; lateral margin lacking short, dense setae. Foretarsomere 5 of male subequal in length to tarsomeres 1–4; foretarsomere 3–4 with apices expanded, ventral apices with small patch of dense, short setae. Foreclaws of male with inner claw curved, about 3 times thicker than outer claw; outer claw simply arcuate, about 3/4 the length of inner claw; empodium bulbous at base. Foreclaws of female 3/4 length of foretarsomere 5, not angled toward venter. Meso and metatibial claws of male with 2 setae, claws 3/4 length of tarsomere 5, not angled toward venter. Metatibia of male with apical spurs weakly curved; ventral spur produced to middle of metatarsomere 1, dorsal spur produced to middle of metatarsomere 2. Parameres: Fig. 38a–c View FIGURES 37–39 .

Diagnosis. Peltonotus brunnipennis is separated from other species of Peltonotus based on the following characters: labrum deeply, narrowly emarginate at middle apex, enlarged palpomere 2, lamellate brush on mala, form of male genitalia ( Fig. 38a–c View FIGURES 37–39 ), claws not strongly angled toward venter and about 3/4 length of metatarsomere 5, lack of setae on the head, male foretibia tridentate, epipleuron of female in ventral view expanded, incised at sternite 3, expansion moderately developed in dorsal view ( Fig. 51 View FIGURES 51–55 ).

Distribution ( Fig. 66 View FIGURE 66 ). Sabah State, Bornean Malaysia.

Locality records (3 specimens) from FUJI, MNHN, WADA .

BORNEAN MALAYSIA. Sabah State (3): Crocker Range, Mt. Kinabalu, Ranau.

Temporal Data. July (2).

Remarks. This species is known by only three specimens, two males and one female. Although the male holotype specimen of P. brunnipennis is missing both foretarsi, we were able to assign one male specimen from Crocker Range to P. brunnipennis based on: mouthpart characters, male genitalia, form of the meso and metatarsal claws, form of the male foretibia, and lack of setae on the head. These specimens differ slightly in elytral coloration (reddishbrown in the holotype specimen; castaneous in the Crocker Range specimen). The female specimen from Ranau was assigned to this taxon based on mouthpart characters, form of the meso and metatarsal claws, and lack of setae on the head.

Benderitter (1934) based his description of this species on one male specimen. He described a transverse furrow in the third metatarsomere, and he questioned whether this was diagnostic of the species. Based on our observations, this is simply a developmental abnormality.
