Peltonotus pruinosus Arrow

( Figs. 26 View FIGURES 19–28 , 59 View FIGURES 56–60 , 65 View FIGURE 65 )

Peltonotus pruinosus Arrow 1910: 156–157 . Holotype female at BMNH labeled: a) "Type" (round label with red border, typeface), b) " Assam Valley" (handwritten), c) "61873" (handwritten), d) "Doherty" (handwritten), e) "Fry Coll. 1905–100." (typeface), e) " Peltonotus pruinosus, Arrow type ♀ " (handwritten), f) our holotype label. Arrow (1910) stated that the description is based on a single, female specimen. Therefore, the specimen is a holotype by monotypy.

Description (female=1). Length 15.7 mm. Widest width 7.6 mm. Color: Female: Head, pronotum, scutellum, propygidium, pygidium, and venter shining black; elytra black with iridescent blue bloom. Head: Surface of frons with base impunctate, middle frons to apex moderately densely punctate; punctures simple, not setigerous. Surface of clypeus moderately densely to confluently punctate (apicolaterally); punctures simple, not setigerous. Clypeus laterally weakly bowed, apex truncate, corners square, beaded; bead weakly arcuate posteriorly. Labrum broadly emarginate at middle. Mandible obliquely quadrate, apex truncate, inner apex lacking teeth. Mentum ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 19–28 ) with apical half rounded, notched at middle; palpomere 2 simple, subequal in width to palpomere 1, lacking setae. Maxilla: mala lacking lamellate setal brush; stipes with setae moderately dense, long, not flattened, not curled at apex; palpomere 2 without internomedial bump. Antennal club subequal to segments 2–7. Pronotum: Bead lacking at base. Surface moderately densely punctate, punctures simple, lacking setae. Lateral margin lacking long setae. Elytral sutural length: About 4.0 times length of scutellum. Elytron: Surface with 5 moderately developed, punctate, longitudinal striae between suture and humerus; punctures moderate in size, moderately dense. Intervals with similar sculpturing. Epipleuron of female in ventral view ( Fig. 59 View FIGURES 56–60 ) broadly expanded from base metacoxa, not incised at apex, lacking setae; in dorsal view expansion not welldeveloped. Propygidium: Surface moderately densely punctate; punctures simple (disc) to ocellate (laterally), not setigerous. Pygidium: Surface moderately densely punctate; punctures simple, not setigerous. Venter: Prosternal keel elongate; apex projecting anteriorly at about 90° with respect to ventral plane, produced to middle of protrochanter, truncate. Legs: Foreclaws of female 3/4 length of foretarsomere 5, claw angled toward venter.

Diagnosis. Males are not known for P. pruinosus . The species is unique among the Peltonotus species based on the form of the female epipleuron ( Fig. 59 View FIGURES 56–60 ), its distribution in the Assam Valley ( Fig. 65 View FIGURE 65 ), and the form of the mentum ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 19–28 ). Females of this species are easily distinguished by the following characters: labrum broadly emarginate at middle; mandible obliquely quadrate, apex truncate, inner apex lacking teeth; epipleuron of female in ventral view ( Fig. 59 View FIGURES 56–60 ) broadly expanded from base metacoxa, not incised at apex, lacking setae; in dorsal view expansion not welldeveloped.

Distribution ( Fig. 65 View FIGURE 65 ). India (Assam Valley).

Locality record (1 specimen) from BMNH

INDIA (1). Assam Valley.

Temporal Data. Not known.

Remarks. This species is known only from the female type specimen. Arrow (1910) stated that the specimen was collected from the Brahmaputra River valley. Arrow (1910) compared P. pruinosus with females of P. malayensis , which he said bore a strong resemblance to P. pruinosus .
