FAMILY PHRYNOSOMATIDAE Fitzinger 1843 , 17
(1 genus, 3 species)
Sceloporus Wiegmann 1828 , col. 369 (3 species)
Sceloporus schmidti Jones 1927 , 4. E. Smith (2001), in an unpublished dissertation, considered Sceloporus schmidti of the S. malachiticus species complex to represent a valid species. McCranie (2009) and Solís et al. (2014) had included all Honduran populations of this complex as S. malachiticus Cope (1865 [p. 178]). Work in progress by myself and Eric Smith will attempt to resolve this species complex taxonomy in Honduras. Sceloporus schmidti (long considered a junior synonym of S. smaragdinus Bocourt 1873 [p. 1]) appears to represent a valid species for the extreme northwestern Honduran populations. The remaining populations appear to represent at least two undescribed species, for which no names are available. The most distinct of those populations is those from the pine forests in the vicinity of La Esperanza, Intibucá, in southwestern Honduras.
Sceloporus squamosus Bocourt 1874 , 212 in A.H.A. Duméril et al. 1870–1909
Sceloporus variabilis Wiegmann 1834 , 51. This species also seems to be a complex of more than one species throughout its wide geographical distribution. Sceloporus olloporus H. Smith (1937 [p. 11]) might be applicable to Honduran populations, but that issue needs study.
