Holotype. Male , USA: CA: Riverside Co., Riverside, 22.xii.1934, A.L. Melander ( USNM, examined).
Diagnosis. This species differs from the extremely similar, and sympatric, M. cryptizona by the overall shape of the wing, but also by the shape of the subcostal vein (Fig. 9), which in M. sulphurizona is longer and straighter. Its barcode is most similar to that of M. colombizona , from which it differs by about 3.89% minimum p-distance.
