Notonecta (Paranecta) variabilis Fieber, 1851 View in CoL
Geographical distribution: Brazil.
Comments: This species was described with four varieties, three from Brazil (scutellaris, dorsalis, and unicolor) and one from the United States of America (maculata). The maculata variety is now N. lunata Hungerford, 1926 and scutellaris, dorsalis, and unicolor are not worthy of varietal names, according to Hungerford (1934). The labels indicated by Fieber (1851) for the Brazilian varieties are “Aus Brasilien ” and “Aus Brasilien, Portorico.” Hungerford (1934) could not locate the types mentioned by Fieber, and proposed two specimens from the Berlin Museum labeled “ Brasilien, Sallow” as the types of N. variabilis , which remain until now the only known representatives of the species. These types are very similar to specimens of N. indica Linnaeus, 1771 caught at Puerto Rico, but Hungerford (1934) chose to retain the name N. variabilis for the specimens from Brazil.
