Aspidosperma melanocalyx Müll.Arg. View in CoL in Mart. & auct. suc., Fl. Bras. 6(1): 52. 1860.
≡ Macaglia melanocalyx (Müll. View in CoL Arg.) Kuntze, Revis. Gen. Pl. 2: 416. 1891.
Holotype:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: 1816–1821, A.F.C.P. de Saint-Hilaire s.n. ( P [barcode P00639544 image!]; isotype: F [fragment] [barcode V0092466F image!]) .
= Aspidosperma leucomelanum Müll.Arg. View in CoL in Warming in Vidensk. Meddel. Naturhist. Foren. Kjøbenhavn 1869(6–8): 105. 1869. Lectotype (designated here): — BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Lagoa Santa, 1864–1865, J.E.B. Warming s.n. (C [barcode C10005746 image!]; isolectotypes: C [barcode C10005747 image!], NY [barcode 00297973 image!]).
= Aspidosperma limae Woodson View in CoL in Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 47(1): 74. 1960. Holotype:— BRAZIL. Pernambuco: Recife, Dois Irmãos , 4 Oct 1949, D.A. Lima 49-333 (MO [barcode MO-2958629 image!]; isotype: IAN [No. 71099!]), syn. nov.
Notes —After analyzing the specimens from the single gathering cited by Müller-Argoviensis (1860a) in the protologue of A. melanocalyx , we believe that the sheet from the herbarium P is the holotype, since the specimen from the herbarium F, which consists only of flower remains, appears to have been taken from the holotype, having been marked as “ ex herbario Musei Parisiensis ”. Furthermore, Müller-Argoviensis (1869) indicated the gathering Warming s.n. in the prologue of A. leucomelanum but did not cite in which herbarium the type would be deposited. Thus, we selected the most complete specimen from this collection as the lectotype of A. leucomelanum (C barcode C10005746) (ICN article 9.3; Turland et al. 2018).
We consider A. limae as a synonym of A. melanocalyx since both have oblong leaves with longer petioles (> 2 cm long), flowers with corolla lobes shorter than the tube (0.4×), and tomentose follicles.
