Diagnosis. Body black, without metallic reflections; clypeal margin not incised (cf. Figs 1–2); funicle with all segments anelliform, without sensilla (Fig. 8); mesosoma flattened (Fig. 11); pecten on 1/2–2/3 length of hind tibia (cf. Fig. 14); forewing with mostly indistinct bare area between R and apical margin, basal cell with few hairs near basal vein; ovipositor sheaths slightly more than half length of hind tibia, hypopygium not reaching tip of gaster (Fig. 18). Male with eyes normal and scape inflated (cf. Fig. 7); mesosoma slightly more arched.

Variation. In some males and females F 5 may be slightly but distinctly larger than F4, in some (rare) cases even having one sensillum; when males are involved it is thus sometimes rather difficult to decide if the specimen belongs to M. varicornis or M. chalybeus .

Comments. Easily distinguishable from other species in having all funicular segments anelliform, without sensilla (except rarely F5) and entire clypeal margin. It seems to be one of the most common species in Europe.

Distribution. Belgium, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Montenegro, Netherlands, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, U.K. ( Noyes 2003); previously unrecorded from Switzerland.

Hosts. Known as a parasitoid of Contarinia tritici (various authors cited by Noyes 2003). Several specimens have been collected in alfalfa fields.
