Type species: Trichomyia inermis Barretto, 1954 View in CoL , by original designation.

Comments. Males of Brachitrichomyia are recognized because the gonocoxites are projected dorsally, each one with elongated posterior arm, 1.0–3.5 times the length of ejaculatory apodeme; projections in the aedeagal complex curved and joined at apex. The subgenus Brachitrichomyia was proposed for grouping seven species from Costa Rica, Colombia, Brazil and Panama.

Species included. T. armata Barretto ; T. brasiliensis, Satchell ; T. inermis Barretto ; T. plumata Araújo & Bravo ; T. pseudodactylis, Quate ; T. quatei, Bravo and T. risaraldensis Bejarano.
