Total length. 3.45–5.50 mm (mean: 4.41 mm) (n=36).

Head. Frons and vertex either entirely yellow (about 10% of material examined), reddish-yellow (40%), or black (50%; Figs 7 a–f), head often darker than pronotum. Labial and maxillary palpi yellow to brownish-black. Antenna pale yellow to yellow, often becoming more brownish towards apex, last antennomere usually dark brown to black ( Fig. 7 a–f). Length of second to third antennomere 0.67–0.78 (mean: 0.72), length of third to fourth antennomere 0.62–0.73 (mean: 0.68). Eyes large and with short interocular distance ( Figs 7 a–f), width of eye to interocular distance 0.60–0.69 (mean: 0.64).

Thorax. Pronotum yellow in 20% of material examined ( Fig. 7a), all other specimens yellowish-red to red ( Figs 7 b–f), about half of specimens with brownish to black spots in outer posterior corners ( Figs 7d, f); broad, strongly trapezoidal, distinctly and deeply punctuated and with distinct micro-sculpture. Pronotal width 1.30–2.06 mm (mean: 1.71 mm), pronotal length 0.62–0.96 mm (mean: 0.78 mm), pronotal length to width 0.43–0.49 (mean: 0.46). Elytron rarely entirely yellow (10%), if so, whole specimen usually yellow or even pale yellow, as in lectotype of Candezea acutangula ( Fig. 13b); other 90% of specimens with black humeral spots and in nearly all these specimens, with transverse brown or black band in apical third ( Figs 7 b–f, 12b, 14b–15b, 17b – 23b) and very rarely with predominantly black elytron and yellow spots; deeply and densely punctuated with indistinct micro-sculpture; elytral length 2.70–4.25 mm (mean: 3.50 mm), elytral width 1.90–2.80 mm (mean: 2.44 mm), maximal width of both elytra to length of elytron 0.66–0.75 (mean: 0.71). Meso- and metathorax yellow, rarely brownish. Legs entirely yellow, length of basi-metatarsi to metatibiae 0.44–0.52 (mean: 0.48).

Abdomen. Yellow.

Male genitalia. Median lobe slender, slightly conical from middle towards apex which is distinctly downcurved ( Figs 8 a–c); apical section lacking ridges or spikes, the apex rounded in lateral view and poorly sclerotized; endophallic brush with two delicate, slender spiculae covered by median lobe and tectum.

Diagnosis. Most similar to Neobarombiella senegalensis . Both species can be distinguished by the shape of their antennomeres, which are slender. They are broader and shorter in N. senegalensis . The third antennomere in N. flavilabris is shorter than the fourth (length of third to fourth antennomere: 0.62–0.73; N. senegalensis 0.47–0.54; Figs 9, 93). The elytron of N. flavilabris are more densely and coarsely punctuated than the usually finely punctuated dorsum in N. senegalensis . However, since these external characters might be atypical for some specimens, only the male genitalia allow distinct differentiation of both species ( Figs 8, 93). The median lobe of N. flavilabris is very short and down-curved apically, with a poorly sclerotized apex and no ridges, while N. senegalensis has a median lobe which is more straight, with a beak-like apical section and two strongly sclerotized ventral ridges.

Other similar species are N. nigrosuturalis sp. n. and N. frontalis sp. n. which can be distinguished both by their black sutural margins ( Figs 7, 153, 173), N. cornuta sp. n. and N. medvedevi sp. n. by their short second antennomere (length of second to third antennomere: 0.67–0.78; 0.55–0.60 in N. cornuta sp. n.; 0.58–0.64 in N. medvedevi sp. n.; Figs 139, 167). Neobarombiella naumanni sp. n. has smaller eyes and a larger interocular distance, width of eye to interocular distance 0.50–0.57 in N. naumanni sp. n. and 0.60–0.69 in N. flavilabris ( Figs 7, 169), and N. fassbenderi sp. n. is much smaller having a total length of 2.65–3.40 mm compared to 3.45–5.50 mm in N. flavilabris ( Figs 7, 145)

Remarks. A wide distribution, obvious high abundance in tropical Africa, and particularly high degree of variability in dorsal colouring has led to no less than ten synonymies in this species. Laboissière, especially in his last publications in 1939 and 1940, described it several times based on distinct colour patterns. Based on the hundreds of specimens revised in this study, it is clear that there are no distinct types of colouring, but rather a continuous polychromatism from entirely pale yellow, over many specimens with more or less broad transverse elytral bands to predominantly black elytron.

Distribution. Nearly pan-Afrotropical, from Sierra Leone to Ethiopia, southwards through the Congo Basin towards Angola and northern and eastern South Africa ( Fig. 11).

Type material examined.

Monolepta flavilabris . Holotype, male: “Type / Pangani Steppe / Pangani Steppe / Monolepta , flavilabris, m. / ex coll., J. Weise / Holotypus, Monolepta , flavilabris Wse, 1903 / Neobarombiella flavilabris, ( Weise, 1903) , Bolz & Wagner det. 04 / AfriGa, specimen ID, 1031, specimen data, documented, 20.VII.2005 “ ( MNHU; Fig. 12). There is only one specimen available from the type locality, which can be treated as holotype. Colouring type Fig. 7c. Type locality: Tanzania, Pangani, 5°26'S / 38°58'E GoogleMaps .

Candezea acutangula . Lectotype, female: “Type / Nguelo / acutangula, m. / ex. coll., J. Weise / Type / Lectotypus, Th. Wagner desig. 2005, Candezea acutangula Wse. 1903 / Neobarombiella flavilabris, ( Weise, 1903) , Bolz & Wagner det. 04 / AfriGa, specimen ID, 952 specimen data, documented, 5.VII.2005 ” ( MNHU; Fig. 13). Weise listed three localities in Tanzania “Nguelo, Mombo, and Kwai”, and gave no details on specimen numbers. A lectotype is here designated to fix the species name on a single specimen; same for all other lectotype designations in this paper. Colouration type Fig. 7a. Type locality: Tanzania, Nguela, 4°45'S / 38°30'E GoogleMaps .— Paralectotypes. 3 ex., Usambara , Nguela, 4°45'S / 38°30'E ( MNHU) GoogleMaps ; 1 ex. There is no specific information on type specimens in the original description. Since there is only one locality and date given, this might be the only one. The specimen also bears a separate “Type” label in Laboissière’s hand-writing and is here treated as the holotype. Colouration type similar to Fig. 7c but with accentuated black elytral colouration. Type locality: Angola, Capelongo near Lucequé , 14°39'S / 15°4'E. GoogleMaps
