Diagnosis Eyes contiguous on frons, postocular bristles (including posterior ventral hairs) wholly black. Legs wholly black.

Description

MALE. Body length 4.5 mm, wing length 3.7 mm.

Head metallic green, with pale gray pollen. Ocellar tubercle distinct. Eyes contiguous for a long distance (about 1/3 as long as frons) on frons; face rather wide with parallel lateral margins. Hairs and bristles on head black; postocular bristles (including posterior ventral hairs) wholly black. Antenna blackish; first flagellomere (Fig. 3) blackish, subtriangular (about 0.7 times longer than wide); arista dark brown, with basal segment rather short. Proboscis black with black hairs; palpus black with black hairs and 1 black apical bristle.

Thorax metallic green, with gray­brown pollen. Mesonotum and scutellum brilliant metallic green with pale gray pollen. Hairs and bristles on thorax black; 6 strong dc, 6–7 irregularly paired acr. 1 long h and 2 short humeral hairs, 1 long ph, 1 slightly short anterior and 1 long posterior sa, 1 long psa; scutellum with 2 pairs of bristles, outer pair somewhat long, as long as 1/3 of inner pair. Propleuron with 2 black hairs and 1 black bristle on upper part, 4–5 black hairs and 1 black bristles on lower portion.

Legs wholly black. Hairs and bristles on legs black; fore coxa with 4 anterior bristles, mid coxa with 8 short anterior bristles, hind coxa with 1 outer bristle at base. Fore femur with row of somewhat short av, and row of long pv; mid femur apically with 3 av, 3–4 long pv; hind femur with 3–4 av apically. Fore tibia with 2 ad, 1 pd and row of hair­like pv, apically with 3 bristles; mid tibia with 2–3 pv, apically with 3 bristles; hind tibia with 4 ad, 5–6 pd and 2 v, and apically with 4 bristles. Fore and hind tarsomere 1 each with row of v. Fore tarsomere 5 slightly swollen; fore tarsus without claw, but enlarged pulvilli about as long as tarsomere 5; mid and hind tarsi each with 2 small claws and 2 short pulvilli. Relative lengths of tibia and 5 tarsomeres LI (fore leg) 6.8: 3.6: 1.7: 1.2: 0.9: 0.8; LII (mid leg) 8.1: 4.4: 2.5: 1.8: 0.9: 0.6; LIII (hind leg) 9.6: 3.5: 3.0:?:?:?.

Wing (Fig. 2) grayish brown with apical and posterior area brownish yellow; veins black, R 4+5 weakly curved backward, M slightly curved, R 4+5 and M nearly parallel apically; CuAx ratio (length of m­cu / length of distal portion of CuA) 0.45. Squama dark brown with long black hairs. Halter dark brown.

Abdomen brownish black, with gray pollen. Hairs and bristles on abdomen black; terga 1–5 with black long bristles on apical margin, sternum 8 with 4 strong bristles.

Male genitalia (Fig. 4). Epandrium about as long as wide, with large lateral lobe bearing deep incision apically and 2 long bristles; its surstylus long and somewhat wide, bearing a spine­like projection apically, 1 strong bristle at middle; inner lobe slender with long bristles, with short process at tip; cercus nearly triangular, without ventral lobe, but with some hairs and 5 long bristles; aedeagus thin and long.

FEMALE. Unknown.

Type material Holotype male, Guangdong: Fugang, Guanyinshan , 15. V. 2004, Ding Yang.

Etymology

The specific name refers to the locality Guangdong.

Comments

The species is similar to Diaphorus nigricans Meigen in having the brown wing, but may be separated from latter by having all legs wholly black and the posterior area of the wing brownish yellow. In D. nigricans , all tibia and tarsi are chiefly yellow ( Yang and Grootaert, 1999).

Diaphorus jinghongensis Wang, Yang and Grootaert , sp. nov. (Figs. 5–6)

Diagnosis Eyes contiguous for a long distance on frons. Legs chiefly black; tibiae dark yellow with blackish extreme base.

Description

MALE. Body length 3.2–3.4 mm, wing length 2.8–3.0 mm.

Head metallic green, with pale gray pollen. Ocellar tubercle distinct. Eyes contiguous for a long distance (about 3/4 as long as frons) on frons, with upper ommatidia enlarged; face rather wide, parallel­sided. Hairs and bristles on head black; postocular bristles (including posterior ventral hairs) black. Antenna blackish; first flagellomere (Fig. 5) blackish, subtriangular (1.5 time wider than long); arista dark brown, with basal segment rather short. Proboscis dark brown with pale hairs; palpus dark brown with 2 black apical bristles.

Thorax dark metallic green, with gray pollen. Hairs and bristles on thorax black; 5 strong dc, 5–6 irregularly paired acr. Propleuron with 2 short black bristles on lower part. Scutellum with 2 pairs of bristles, inner pair rather long and outer pair somewhat shorter (about 1/4 as long as inner pair). Legs chiefly black; tibiae dark yellow with blackish extreme base, tarsi dark yellow. Hairs and bristles on legs black; fore coxa with 4 anterior bristles, mid coxa with 2 anterior bristles, hind coxa with 1 outer bristle at basal 1/4. Fore femur with row of av on basal 2/3, and row of (about 6–7) pv on entire length; mid femur with row of short v, apically with 2 long av; hind femur apically with 2 av and 2 pv. Fore tibia with 1 ad at basal 1/4, apically with 3 short bristles; mid tibia with 1 ad near base, 1 pd beyond middle, apically with 4 bristles; hind tibia with 1 ad at basal 1/5, and 3–4 pd, apically with 4 bristles. Fore tarsus without claw, with enlarged pulvilli about as long as tarsomere 5; mid and hind tarsi each with 2 small claws. Relative lengths of tibia and 5 tarsomeres LI 2.1: 1.3: 0.6: 0.4: 0.3: 0.3; LII 2.2: 1.5: 0.8: 0.5: 0.3: 0.3; LIII 3.0: 1.0: 0.8: 0.5: 0.3: 0.3.

Wing hyaline, tinged with gray, posterior portion paler; veins brown, R 4+5 and M parallel apically, M weakly bent at middle; CuAx ratio 0.6. Squama black with long black hairs. Halter blackish.

Abdomen black, with gray pollen. Hairs and bristles on abdomen black; terga 1–6 with row of long bristles on posterior margin, sternum 8 with 4 strong bristles.

Male genitalia (Fig. 6). Epandrium about as long as wide, with wide lateral lobe bearing deep incision apically and 2 long bristles; its surstylus long, bearing a spine­like projection apically, 1 strong bristle at middle; inner lobe short with long bristles; cercus somewhat round, without ventral lobe, with some hairs and 5 long bristles; aedeagus thin and long.

FEMALE. Unknown.

Etymology The specific epithet derives from the locality of the holotype Jinghong (Yunnan, Xishuangbanna).

Comments

The new species is similar to Diaphorus bisetus Yang and Grootaert in having the abdominal dorsum entirely black and all femora chiefly black, but may be separated from latter by having all femora entirely black, all tibiae brown with blackish base. In D. bisetus , the femora are chiefly black with the extreme tips brownish yellow, and all tibiae are entirely black ( Yang and Grootaert, 1999).

Diagnosis

Legs yellow; fore coxa yellow, mid coxa blackish, hind coxa brownish yellow, hind femur with apical 1/5 dark brown, with long ventral hairs on apical 2/3, and 5–6 strong av on apical 1/4.

Description

MALE. Body length 3.8 mm, wing length 3.4 mm.

Head metallic green, with pale gray pollen. Ocellar tubercle distinct. Eyes contiguous for a short distance (about 1/3 as long as frons) on frons, with upper ommatidia enlarged; face rather wide, parallel­sided. Hairs and bristles on head black; lower postocular bristles (including posterior ventral hairs) pale. Antenna blackish; first flagellomere ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7–8 ) brownish yellow, subtriangular, 1.5 times wider than long; arista subapical, brownish yellow, with basal segment rather short. Proboscis brown with black hairs; palpus yellow with black hairs and 1 black apical bristle.

Thorax metallic green, with gray pollen. Scutellum metallic green. Hairs and bristles on thorax black; 5 strong dc, 7–8 irregularly paired acr. Propleuron with 1 black hair and 1 black bristle on lower part. Scutellum with 2 pairs of bristles, inner pair rather long and outer pair shorter (about 1/4 as long as inner pair). Legs yellow; fore coxa yellow, mid coxa blackish, hind coxa brownish yellow, hind femur with apical 1/5 dark brown, all tarsomeres 2–5 brownish to brown. Hairs and bristles on legs black; fore coxa with 4–5 anterior bristles, hind coxa with 1 outer bristle at basal 1/4. Fore femur with row of av on basal 2/3, row of pv on entire length; hind femur with long ventral hairs (longer than femur width) on apical 2/3, and 5–6 strong av on apical 1/4. Mid tibia with 2 ad, 2 pd, and 1 av (at middle), apically with 4 long bristles; hind tibia with 1 ad at basal 1/5, row of pd (of which 3 longer), 6–7 short v, apically with 4 long bristles. Fore tarsus without claw, but with enlarged pulvilli slightly longer than tarsomere 5. Mid and hind tarsi each with 2 small claws. Hind tarsomere 1 subequal with tarsomere 2 in length. Relative lengths of tibia and 5 tarsomeres LI 2.8: 1.2: 0.6: 0.4: 0.3: 0.3; LII 3.2: 1.8: 0.9: 0.7: 0.4: 0.3; LIII 4.1: 1.1: 1.2: 0.8: 0.5: 0.3.

Wing hyaline, very weakly tinged with gray; veins brown, R 4+5 and M parallel apically, M straight; CuAx ratio 0.44. Squama yellow with long black hairs. Halter yellow.

Abdomen brown to blackish with gray pollen; tergum 1 entirely yellow, terga 2–3 chiefly yellow with narrow posterior margins brown to dark brown, sterna 1–3 entirely yellow. Hairs and bristles on abdomen black; terga 1–6 with row of long bristles on posterior margin, sternum 8 with 4 strong bristles.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 7–8 ). Epandrium about as long as wide, with long lateral lobe bearing 2 long apical bristles; its surstylus long and thick; inner lobe short, bifurcated apically, with long bristles; cercus somewhat round, with long ventral lobe, with long bristles; aedeagus thin and long.

FEMALE. Body length 3.5–3.8 mm, wing length 3.2–3.5 mm. Similar to male, but fore tarsus with 2 claws, and pulvilli shorter than tarsomere 5; hind femur without long ventral hairs.

Etymology The specific epithet derives from the long ventral hairs on the hind femur.

Comments

The new species is similar to Diaphorus basiniger Yang and Grootaert for having the abdominal dorsum partly yellow basally and all femora yellow, but may be separated from the latter by the hind femur with long ventral hairs (longer than femur width) on apical 2/3 and 5–6 strong av on apical 1/4, and the hind coxa brownish yellow. In D. basiniger , the hind femur has no long bristles, except 3–4 av apically, and the hind coxa is black ( Yang and Grootaert, 1999).

Diagnosis Eyes narrowly separated on frons. Legs yellow, fore coxa yellow, mid and hind coxae black, hind femur with 1 row of long av, irregularly 2 rows of shorter and soft pv.

Description

MALE. Body length 4.0– 4.1 mm, wing length 3.5–3.6 mm.

Head metallic green, with pale gray pollen. Ocellar tubercle distinct. Eyes narrowly separated (about equal with the width of median ocellus) on frons; face rather wide, parallel­sided. Hairs and bristles on head black; postocular bristles (including posterior ventral hairs) pale. Antenna blackish; first flagellomere ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9–10 ) blackish, somewhat round apically, about as long as wide; arista dark brown, with basal segment rather short. Proboscis black with brown hairs; palpus yellow black hairs and 1 black apical bristle.

Thorax metallic green, with gray brown pollen. Mesonotum and scutellum brilliant metallic green with pale gray pollen. Hairs and bristles on thorax black; 5 strong dc, 6–7 irregularly paired acr. 1 long h, 2 npl; scutellum with 2 pairs of bristles, Propleuron with 2–3 short black hairs on upper part, 1 black bristle on lower portion.

Legs yellow; fore coxa yellow with brownish base, mid and hind coxae black with yellow apex; all femora and tibiae yellow; all tarsi from tip of segment 1 onward brownish to dark brown. Hairs and bristles on legs black; fore coxa with 4 anterior bristles, mid coxa with 8 short anterior bristles, hind coxa with 1 outer bristle at base. Fore femur with row of somewhat short av, and row of long pv; mid femur apically with row of av; hind femur with row of long av, irregularly 2 rows of shorter and soft pv, 2–3 av and 2–3 pv on apex longer. Fore tibia with 1 ad at base, 1 pd at middle, row of hair­like pv, apically with 3 bristles; mid tibia with 1 ad at base, 2 pd, 1 pv at middle, apically with 4 bristles; hind tibia with 1 ad, 5–6 pd, row of (about 6–7) av on basal 2/3, apically with 4 bristles. Fore and hind tarsomere 1 with row of v. Fore tarsomere 5 slightly swollen; fore tarsus without claw, with enlarged pulvilli slightly longer than tarsomere 5; mid and hind tarsi each with 2 small claws and 2 short pulvilli. Two males, Yunnan: Xishuangbanna, Jinghong (300 m), 12. IV. 2002, Wenquan Zhen. Also, we examined the male holotype of D. luteipes Parent deposited in Muséum National d’Historie Naturelle, Paris.
