Diagnosis. Differs from the other congeners, with exception of H. lacusnigri , H. makarovi sp. nov., H. microcorna and H. plasana , by the presence of a strongly developed anterior lateral process on angioxocite. From H. lacusnigri , H. intermedia differs by 1) the shape of the anterior lateral process (straight in H. intermedia vs. robust, posterior end strongly bent distad in H. lacusnigri ), 2) the shape of the posterior lamella (well-developed in H. intermedia vs. poorly developed in H. lacusnigri ), 3) the size of the posterior lateral process (small in H. intermedia vs. strongly developed and curved posteriad in H. lagusnigri ) or 4) the size of mesal process (small in H. intermedia vs. strongly developed in H. lacusnigri ). From H. makarovi sp. nov., H. intermedia differs by 1) the size and shape of mesal process (small, without teeth in H. intermedia vs. robust, with teeth in H. makarovi sp. nov.), 2) the size of posterior lateral process (small in H. intermedia vs. well-developed in H. makarovi sp. nov.) or 3) the size of posterior lamella (well-developed in H. intermedia vs. vestigial in H. makarovi sp. nov.). H. intermedia seems to be most similar with H. plasana and H. microcorna . From H. plasana , H. intermedia differs by the shape of the anterior lateral process (simple in H. intermedia vs. distally bifurcated in H. plasana ). From H. microcorna , H. intermedia differs only by the size and shape of posterior lamella (long and parallel with distal half of angiocoxite until the base in H. interme- dia vs. shorter and bent down into an extension in H. microcorna ), or by the geographic distribution ( H. intermedia presents in the Carpatho-Balkan arc vs. H. microcorna presents in the Dinarides).
Distribution ( Figs 38 View FIGURE 38 , 42 View FIGURE 42 ). Serbia: known only from its type locality, Golubinjska reka, Đerdap ( Mršić 1985).
Comments. Poorly described taxon. Originally it was described as a subspecies of H. lacusnigri then raised to species level by Makarov (2008), who already noted some misinterpretations in the description of Mršić (1985). Given that this was one of Mršić’s first papers on millipedes, and that he had many errors in his later works, the description of this species must be taken with reserve.
Mršić (1985: 148) stated that the holotype was deposited at the Natural History Museum in Belgrade, Serbia, but there is no trace of the material there. The holotype probably remained in Mršić’s private collection after his death. Until the holotype of this taxon turns up or new specimens are found, the status of this species remains questionable .
