Description. Le: 4.4–6.25 mm, Wi: 3.4–4.8 mm, Lp: 1.6–2.25 mm, Wp: 2.7–3.55 mm, Le/Wi: 1.20–1.35, Wp/Lp ratio: 1.50–1.66. Body from short–oval to oval, males slightly stouter than females.
In typically coloured specimens pronotal disc black with two smal yellow spots at base, scutellum black, elytral disc yellow with three broad, black vittae, along suture and along sides, connected on slope but marginal interval and apex of disc yellow ( figs 31–33 View FIGURES 31 – 36 ). In common form named ab. baumanni dorsum uniformly yellow ( fig. 39 View FIGURES 37 – 42 ). Between these forms many intermediates were observed ( figs 34–38 View FIGURES 31 – 36 View FIGURES 37 – 42 ): often black on pronotal disc forms only triangular spot with two large basal yellow spots ( figs 34, 36 View FIGURES 31 – 36 , 37 View FIGURES 37 – 42 ) or is reduced to three basal stripes ( fig. 35 View FIGURES 31 – 36 ), elytral vittae sometimes narrow and not connected apically ( figs 34–36 View FIGURES 31 – 36 ), or reduced to short rudiments of lateral vittae or spots at base and posterolateral parts of disc ( fig. 37 View FIGURES 37 – 42 ), occasionally only pronotum with M-shaped pattern but elytra uniformly yellow ( fig. 38 View FIGURES 37 – 42 ). In southern parts of distribution range predominate forms with pronotal pattern reduced to three or four spots and elytral lateral vittae divided into 3–5 separate spots ( figs 40–42 View FIGURES 37 – 42 ), sometimes also separate spot on humeral callus and small additional spot in 1/5 length of second interval ( fig. 40 View FIGURES 37 – 42 ), sutural vitta from broad with irregular sides to very narrow, limited to sutural margin, or completely obsolete (= ab. breviuscula ). Explanate margin always yellow. Head usually black, sometimes brown, or area between clypeal grooves brown and central plate black, thorax black, abdomen black narrowly surrounded by yellow. Coxa usually black, trochanters more or less infuscate, rest of legs yellow. Antennae yellow, sometimes last segment infuscate apically.
Pronotum elliptical ( figs 31, 32, 34–42 View FIGURES 31 – 36 View FIGURES 37 – 42 ), with maximum width in the middle, anterior margin regularly convex, sides broadly rounded, no basal corners. Surface of disc impunctate or with extremely fine sparse pricks, shiny. Explanate margin broad, impunctate, shiny, transparent with well visible honeycomb structure.
Base of elytra much wider than base of pronotum ( figs 31, 32, 34–42 View FIGURES 31 – 36 View FIGURES 37 – 42 ), humeral angles distinctly protruding anterad, subangulate, in some specimens elytral margin behind humeral angle shallowly emarginated, then humeri subacute. Disc regularly convex in profile with top of convexity in postscutellar point ( fig. 33 View FIGURES 31 – 36 ), without impressions. Punctation fine, arranged in regular rows, from sparse to moderately dense, distance between punctures from as wide as to three times wider than puncture diameter. Marginal row distinct, its punctures distinctly coarser than punctures in central rows. Intervals flat, three to five times wider than rows, marginal interval 1.5–2.0 times wider than submarginal one, no humeral or lateral folds. Explanate margin narrow, strongly declivous, in the widest part 5.5–6.0 times narrower than disc, surface usually impunctate but in some specimens with very shallow sparse punctures, shiny, transparent with well visible honeycomb structure.
Eyes very large, gena obsolete ( fig. 21 View FIGURES 20 – 23 ). Clypeus broad, approximately 1.3 times as wide as long. Clypeal grooves fine but well marked, in most populations in basal 2/3 length of clypeus running close to margin of eye then converging in obtuse angle or arch, in populations from extreme west and extreme east of range clypeal grooves run close to margin of eye only in basal half then converging in obtuse angle, surface of clypeus from slightly to strongly convex, the most convex clypeus has population from Cameroon and bassin of Congo, the less convex populations from extreme east. Surface of clypeus microreticulate, from slightly alutaceous to slightly shiny with few very small, setose punctures. Labrum minutely emarginate to 1/6 length. Antennae stout, segments 9–10 slightly transverse. Length ratio of antennal segments: 100:59:76:76:65:59:56:53:56:59:103. Segment 3 approximately 1.3 times as long as segment 2 and as long as segment 4.
Prosternum moderately broad in the middle, moderately expanded apically, area between coxa flat but with more or less developed median groove, surface from regular to slightly obliquely wrinkled on sides with several small hairy punctures, expanded apex not or slightly convex with slightly irregular surface and few coarse, hairy punctures.
Claws with small basal tooth.
Distribution. Widespread species, known from West, Central and East Africa, south to Zambia ( fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ). In forest regions of western and central Africa predominates stripped nominotypical form ( figs 31–33 View FIGURES 31 – 36 ), in arid sub- Saharan Region and eastern Africa predominates unicolorous form ab. baumanni ( fig. 39 View FIGURES 37 – 42 ).
Remarks. One of the most widely distributed and common African cassids, very variable in body shape and colour pattern. Generally, in Central Africa in wet habitats predominates vittate form ( figs 31–33 View FIGURES 31 – 36 ), while in sub- Saharan Region and eastern Africa in dry habitats predominates uniformly yellow form ( fig. 39 View FIGURES 37 – 42 ) but sometimes within vittate populations occur specimens of unicolorous form. Specimens from western part of range are usually stouter, with more acute humeri than specimens from eastern part of range. Clypeus in western populations is much more convex than in eastern forms, although eastern populations have much more impressed clypeal lines. The relation among various forms of Ch. aubei needs genetic studies in the field and in laboratory conditions. Perhaps the taxon is a group of sibling species with partly overlapping characters, or its polymorphism has a partly geographic character. Dried museum specimens do not allow to verify this hypothesis. Thus, we treated all forms of Ch. aubei -complex as a single polymorphic species. On the other hand, several uniformly yellow taxa described from eastern and southern part of central Africa are very close to particular populations of Ch. aubei and their specific status is also doubtful. We have conserved species status for most of them because examined material of these taxa is not as rich in specimens as Ch. aubei . Their relationships to Ch. aubei also need genetic studies.
Spaeth (1924) suggested that Ch. semivittata sensu Weise, 1896 is not conspecific with C. semivittata Boheman, 1855 , and proposed for it a new substitute name Ch. weisei Spaeth, 1924 . We have examined specimens preserved in ZMHU and identified by Weise as Ch. semivittata and in our opinion they really belong to a different aberration than specimens named as semivittata by Boheman (1855). On the other hand, both represent variations of the extremely variable Ch. aubei (Boh.) . Thus, the name Ch. weisei is a junior synonym of Ch. aubei . Maculate form was described as Ch. aubei ab. dissoluta ( figs 40–42 View FIGURES 37 – 42 ) but vittate, maculate and uniformly yellow forms often occur simultaneously in one locality thus we treated Ch. aubei ab. dissoluta as simple synonym of Ch. aubei . Maculate forms predominate in southern part of range of this wide-spread and variable taxon.
The typical vittate form of Ch. aubei ( figs 31, 32 View FIGURES 31 – 36 ) is very similar to untypical form of Ch. quadriguttata ( figs 105, 106 View FIGURES 102 – 106 ) with regular elytral stripes, but in Ch. aubei inner margin of lateral stripes is always regular while in Ch. quadriguttata the margin in mid length is at least slightly bent towards the suture. Form of Ch. aubei with thin lateral stripes not connected on suture ( figs 34, 35 View FIGURES 31 – 36 ) is similar to Ch. circe ( fig. 48 View FIGURES 43 – 49 ) but differs in fine elytral punctation with interspaces in lateral rows mostly twice as wide as puncture diameter while in Ch. circe punctation of elytra is coarse and dense with punctures in lateral rows almost touching each other. Small specimens of Ch. aequinoctialis are similar to the vittate form of Ch. aubei ( figs 24, 25 View FIGURES 24 – 30 , 31, 32 View FIGURES 31 – 36 ) but differ in yellow clypeus and black marginal interval while in Ch. aubei clypeus is black and marginal interval yellow ( figs 19 View FIGURES 17 – 19 , 21 View FIGURES 20 – 23 ). Spotted form of Ch. aubei (described as ab. dissoluta) is similar to the group of species with pattern formed by rows of separate black spots: Ch. nigrostillata , Ch. tanganikana and Ch. tessellata ( figs 40–42 View FIGURES 37 – 42 , 83, 84 View FIGURES 80 – 86 , 96–101 View FIGURES 94 – 101 ) but they differ in presence of at least two pairs of black spots behind scutellum while in Ch. aubei no spot occurs in sutural area; at most along the suture runs a more or less regular black vitta. The most similar pattern to spotted form of Ch. aubei has Ch. picturata ( figs 94, 95 View FIGURES 94 – 101 ) but it differs in more elongate body (length/width ratio 1.48–1.49 vs. 1.29–1.32), base of elytra only slightly wider than pronotum and strongly declivous explanate margin of elytra. Completely yellow form of Ch. aubei (described as Ch. baumanni ) is very similar to two other yellow species with black clypeus and short-oval to subcircular body: Ch. observabilis and Ch. flavipennis ( figs 39 View FIGURES 37 – 42 , 56–61 View FIGURES 56 – 61 , 111, 112 View FIGURES 107 – 114 ). Identification of these three forms needs comparison with series of properly identified specimens. In Ch. aubei clypeal grooves run close to margin to eyes and on top of clypeal triangle converging in obtuse angle while in two relatives clypeal grooves form regular triangle with sharp top thus between the triangle and inner margin of eyes runs well visible, convex fold often paler coloured than the clypeal triangle. Of these three similar forms Ch. aubei ab. baumanni has the most convex clypeus, especially in western populations the convexity is very high while in both relatives the clypeus is flat or only moderately convex.
