Diagnosis. Hemicrepidius niger can be distinguished from all other Hemicrepidius by the following combination of features: A prosternal process that in lateral view is curved between the procoxae and is narrow and straight beyond procoxae ( Fig. 30c View Fig ); a nearly straight posterior margin of the hypomeron; dense pronotal disc punctures, separated by less than 0.5× puncture diameter, and which are simple; and strongly serrate antennae with antennomere 3 triangular and similar in shape to antennomere 4.
In North America, it could be confused with H. decoloratus and H. hemipodus , two species that never have strongly serrate antennae and never have antennomere 3 triangular like in H. niger .
Redescription. Because this is an introduced species from Europe, and because of types of European species not being examined, no redescription is provided. The diagnosis and key above should be used to identify this species in North America. The provided figures will also help in identifying this introduced species.
Distribution. In North America specimens have only been collected in New Brunswick and Ontario, Canada ( Douglas 2011) ( Fig. 32a View Fig ).
Notes. The list of references in the synonymic table is not exhaustive, with many more works published on this species than listed here. The synonyms follow Cate (2007).
The identity of the Canadian specimens as H. niger was confirmed by Hume Douglas (personal communication). It is likely that this species has expanded its range from the known localities, and it would not be surprising if it were found in bordering states of the USA. All recorded North American specimens appear to be the unicolorous dark form of the species.

combination
( Figs. 31a–e View Fig , 32b View Fig )
Corymbites obscurus LeConte 1853: 442 ; Candèze 1863: 107.
Ludius obscurus (LeConte) : Schenkling 1927: 392; Van Dyke 1932: 409; Brown 1935: 213 [see note].
Asaphes dilaticollis Motschulsky 1859: 368 ; Horn 1880: 72. New synonymy.
Hemicrepidius dilaticollis (Motschulsky) : Leng 1920: 170; Knowlton 1934: 82; Becker 1979a: 407; Bousquet 1991: 183; Bousquet et al. 2013: 184; Arias-Bohart and Elgueta 2015: 7.
Asaphes coracinus Candèze 1863: 214 ; Horn 1875: 149 (as synonym of H. carbonatus ); Horn 1880: 71 (as synonym of H. carbonatus ); Candèze 1891: 181. New synonymy.
Diagnosis. Hemicrepidius obscurus can be distinguished from all other Hemicrepidius by the dense pronotal punctation, separated by less than half of a puncture diameter to nearly contiguous, and the straight, dorso-ventrally thickened prosternal process.
Hemicrepidius obscurus could be confused with H. californicus , H. carbonatus , and possibly H. montanus . The differences from the first two species are outlined under their Diagnoses above. Hemicrepidius obscurus differs from H. montanus by having very dense pronotal punctation on the disc and by having the antenna with antennomere 3 differing in shape from antennomere 4.
Redescription. Length 10.5–21.0 mm, width 2.0–5.0 mm; color uniformly dark brown to black, elytra not contrasting with pronotum, sometimes parts of ventral side paler, particularly edges of segments, hind angles sometimes subtly paler; integument shining. Setae moderately long, suberect, brown-black. Head: Punctures subumbilicate, nearly contiguous; frons weakly concave anteromedially, some with slight triangular impression medially in dorsal view; frontal carina usually complete, broadly V-shaped to broadly curved, sometimes interrupted medially by a few punctures when viewed from the front; frontoclypeal region reduced to thin line to absent medially; eyes moderately bulging, ocular index 62–70 (n = 4); antenna serrate, antennomere 2 subcylindrical, antennomere 3 subtriangular and around 2× length of 2, antennomere 3 subequal in length to 4 and with intermediate setation between 2 and 4, antennomeres 4–11 about 2× longer than wide, becoming narrower apically, each with subtle medial line bearing less setae than edges, antennomere 11 with tip constricted as pseudosegment, antenna reaching pronotal posterior edge to extending past it by up to 3 antennomeres. Prothorax: Pronotum as wide as long to 1.3× wider than long, with males being generally narrower than females, widest at hind angles or just anterior of midlength; sides weakly (males) to broadly (females) arcuate, evenly narrowing anteriorly; hind angles slightly divergent due to sinuate edge anterior of hind angle, dorsal carina present, subparallel to lateral margin; punctures similar in size to punctures on head, appearing simple to subumbilicate, separated by one to two puncture diameters, to nearly contiguous on disc, punctures closer and larger laterally, nearly contiguous and clearly subumbilicate; posterior edge with sublateral notches. Hypomeron with subumbilicate punctures, nearly contiguous throughout; posterior margin emarginate with hind angle visible in lateral ( Fig. 31c View Fig ) and ventral view and truncate at tip. Prosternum with punctation smaller than punctation on hypomeron, appearing simple, nearly contiguous laterally and shortly becoming very sparse medially; anterior lobe slightly deflexed, broadly rounded and partially covering ventral mouthparts; prosternal process straight, thickened dorso-ventrally, impunctate between procoxae. Pterothorax: Mesoventral cavity with lateral edges raised ventrally in an almost 90-degree angle, visible anteriad mesocoxae in lateral view; posterior edge of cavity truncate. Metaventrite with punctures simple, smaller than punctures on hypomeron, dense laterally, nearly touching, becoming much sparser medially, separated by two to three puncture diameters. Scutellar shield elongate, about twice as long as wide, narrowly rounded posteriorly, sides sinuate, dorsal surface weakly convex, anterior margin nearly straight, setae radiating from midline, similar in length and color to setae on pronotum and elytra. Elytral striae moderately impressed basally; interstriae flat to slightly convex, evenly and densely punctured; basal carina crenulate. Legs with tarsomere lobes on tarsomere 3 and tarsomere 2 subequal in size, narrow, difficult to see dorsally, lobe on tarsomere 1 small and slightly larger than lobe on tarsomere 4, lobe on 4 smallest, both visible laterally. Abdominal ventrites: Punctures simple, slightly smaller than punctures on metaventrite, nearly contiguous laterally, sparser medially, separated by one to one-and-a-half puncture diameters; fifth ventrite narrowly rounded; side of each ventrite with microserrations. Male genitalia ( Figs. 31d, e View Fig ): Parameres subparallel on basal three-fourths and sinuate basal to sharply acute (<45°) or hooked pre-apical expansion, apex of parameres acute, slightly membranous, setose ventral patch near pre-apical expansions and 3–5 dorsal apical setae. Median lobe moderately wide, gradually narrowing apically, apex strongly constricted; basal struts gradually curved latero-basally.
Distribution. Specimens have been examined from the following provinces and states: CANADA: BC; UNITED STATES: CA, NV, UT, WA ( Fig. 32b View Fig ).
Notes. This species is discussed in most works under the name H. dilaticollis . Examinations of types and the limited published works on this species support the application of the principle of priority in this case. The recognition of Corymbites obscurus as belonging in Hemicrepidius was first noted by Brown (1935), who stated that the species should be transferred, and that the incorrect original placement was due to the lack of legs on the type specimen. This is the first publication of the combination suggested by Brown.
Asaphes coracinus is here moved from synonymy with H. carbonatus to this species. The type specimen of A. coracinus is a typical H. obscurus in all regards. Specimens in the MCZC labeled A. coracinus are typical H. carbonatus , and not like the type, likely leading to Horn’ s mistaken synonymy. It
is hypothesized that Candèze did not know of A. dilaticollis at the time of writing his manuscript in 1863, leading him to describe the species as new.
Larvae have not been associated for this species.
