Type species. Chironomus supplicans Meigen, 1830 (= chlorolobus Kieffer, 1918 ).
Emended diagnosis. Based on the Chinese species, generic diagnosis of Cryptochironomus for adult male of the latter ( Cranston et al. 1989) must be emended as follows: wing length 2.20–5.00 (2.20–2.70 in C. maculus Yan & Wang sp. n.); antennal ratio 1.58–5.50 (1.58–2.78 in C. maculus Yan & Wang sp. n.). Inferior volsella sometime with two digitiform projections.
