Mungos mungo (Gmelin, 1788) View in CoL . Syst. Nat., 13th ed., 1:84.
TYPE LOCALITY: "Asia."
DISTRIBUTION: South Africa, N. to Sudan and W. to Niger and Gambia (PG), excluding Congo.
COMMENT: Gmelin, 1788, gave the type locality as Asia but Ogilby, 1835, Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1835:101, restricted it to Gambia. Thomas, 1882, Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1882:90, believed it to be in the eastern part of South Africa, Cape Prov., as did Roberts, 1929, Ann. Transvaal Mus., 13: 84, and Allen, 1924, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 47: 155-156 (WCW).
ISIS NUMBER: 5301412005030002001.
