status

Ailurus F. Cuvier, 1825 . Hist. Nat. Mamm., 5(50):3.

COMMENT: Immunological evidence suggests that Ailurus is more closely related to ursids than to procyonids; see Todd and Pressmann, 1968, Carniv. Genet. Newsl., 5: 105-108, and Sarich, 1976, Trans. Zool. Soc. Lond., 33: 165- 171. Corbet and Hill, 1980:95, placed this monotypic genus in Ailuropodidae , but see comment under fulgens , and under Ursidae .
