TYPE LOCALITY: Japan .

DISTRIBUTION: Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku, Tsushima, intro, on Sado Isl. ( Japan); Korea; perhaps parts of China.

COMMENT: May be conspecific with americana , martes, and zibellina ; see Anderson, 1970, Acta Zool. Fenn., 130: 132; Hagmeier, 1961, Can. Field Nat., 75: 122- 138; and Corbet, 1978: 172; but see also Hall, 1981:981; Gromov and Baranova, 1981:256-258. Heptner and Naumov, eds., 1967, [Mammals of the Soviet Union], 2(1) p. 507, included Japanese and Korean melampus in zibellina ; but also see Corbet, 1978:173, 174.
